The Door as a Type of Christ

This article explains the biblical symbol and type of the door, which throughout Scripture represents the Lord Jesus Christ as the only entrance into salvation, safety, and the presence of God. In the Tabernacle, the tent of meeting, the ark, and the temple, doors marked the boundaries between the holy and the common, the inside and the outside. Jesus declared, "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture." He is the door of the sheep, the door of salvation, and the door to the Father.

1. The Door as a Symbol of Access and Exclusion

Throughout Scripture, the door represents the point of access to a building, a city, a sanctuary, or a home. To be inside the door is to be safe, sheltered, and included. To be outside the door is to be exposed, vulnerable, and excluded. The Passover required that the people remain inside the door with the blood applied to the doorposts. The door of the Tabernacle marked the boundary between the camp and the holy place. The door of the ark was the only means of escape from the flood. Jesus uses this powerful symbol to declare that He alone is the entrance to salvation.

2. The Door of the Ark: Salvation from Judgment

The Lord said to Noah, "Come into the ark, you and all your household." God shut him in. The door of the ark was the only entrance. All who entered through that door were saved from the flood of judgment. All who remained outside perished. The ark is a type of Christ, and the door of the ark is a type of Christ as the sole means of salvation. Jesus is the door of the ark of safety. As God shut the door and no man could open it, so salvation is solely God's work. Those who enter through Christ are secure; those outside face eternal judgment.

3. The Door of the Tabernacle: Access to God's Presence

The Tabernacle had a door, a screen of blue, purple, and scarlet thread and fine woven linen, hung on five pillars. This door marked the entrance to the holy place. Only priests could enter through this door to minister before the Lord. The door of the Tabernacle points to Christ as the way into the presence of God. The writer of Hebrews declares that believers have boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh. Christ is the door to the Tabernacle, the door to the holy place, and the door to the holy of holies.

4. The Door of the Temple: The Only Way to Worship

Solomon's temple had great doors of olive wood and cypress wood, carved with cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, overlaid with gold. These doors were the only entrance into the house of the Lord. The psalmist wrote, "Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise." The prophet declared that the gate of the Lord is the entrance for the righteous. All worshipers had to enter through the door. Christ is the true door of the temple. He is the only way to worship the Father acceptably. No one comes to the Father except through Him.

5. Jesus Declares, "I Am the Door of the Sheep"

Jesus said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice." Then Jesus declared, "I am the door of the sheep." The sheepfold had only one legitimate entrance. Any other way was the way of thieves and robbers. Jesus is that one legitimate door. All who came before Him who claimed to be the way were false. He alone is the true door.

6. The Door of Salvation: Saved Through Christ Alone

Jesus said, "If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved." The promise is clear and certain. Salvation is not found through religion, morality, philosophy, or any other means. Christ is the door. To enter through Him is to believe in Him, to trust in His death and resurrection, and to receive Him as Lord and Savior. The one who enters through this door is saved. He is saved from the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and ultimately the presence of sin. There is no other door. There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

7. The Door to Pasture: Life and Abundance

Jesus continued, "And will go in and out and find pasture." To go in and out is a Hebrew idiom for a life of security, freedom, and provision. The sheep that enter through the true door are not imprisoned; they are free. They come in for protection and go out for pasture. The Good Shepherd leads them to green pastures and still waters. The door leads to abundant life. Thieves come only to steal, kill, and destroy. Christ came that His sheep might have life and have it abundantly. The door is not a prison gate but the entrance to a rich and full life.

8. The Closed Door of Judgment

In the parable of the ten virgins, the foolish virgins arrived late to the wedding feast. The bridegroom answered, "Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you." The door was shut. In the parable of the narrow door, Jesus said, "Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, you will stand outside and knock, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open for us,' and He will answer and say, 'I do not know you.'" The door of salvation is open now, but the day is coming when it will be shut forever. Today is the day of salvation.

9. Christ Stands at the Door of the Heart

To the church in Laodicea, Jesus said, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." Here the door is not heaven's entrance but the door of the human heart. Christ does not break the door down; He knocks. He awaits an invitation. To open the door is to repent and believe. He promises intimate fellowship to the one who opens. This is the door of conversion, the door of personal relationship with Christ.

10. The Open Door for the Gospel

Paul spoke of a great and effective door that God opened for the gospel. He asked for prayer that God would open a door for the word. The door is an opportunity for preaching the gospel. While the door of salvation is open, believers are to enter themselves and bring others with them. The open door of the gospel will not remain open forever. The door of the ark was shut. The door of the wedding feast was shut. The door of salvation will one day be shut. Now is the time to enter, and now is the time to invite others to enter.

Conclusion
Jesus Christ is the door. He is the door of the ark, the door of the Tabernacle, the door of the temple, and the door of the sheepfold. He is the door to salvation, the door to pasture, the door to the Father, and the door to eternal life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. The door is open now. The door is narrow, but it is open. Strive to enter. Behold, He stands at the door and knocks. Open the door, and He will come in. Enter through the door, and you will be saved.
