Study Notes — Exodus 30
5 sectionsExodus 30 details the final furnishings and regulations for Israel's tabernacle worship, focusing on the altar of incense, the census tax, the bronze laver, and the holy anointing oil and incense. Each element underscores the holiness of God's dwelling place and the need for ritual purity among His people. Through these specific instructions, the Lord establishes patterns of worship, atonement, and consecration that point forward to Christ's intercession and our sanctification in Him.
The Lord commands Moses to construct a small altar of acacia wood, overlaid with pure gold, measuring one cubit square and two cubits high (verses 1–2). This altar is to be placed before the veil, near the ark of the covenant (verse 6)—in the Holy Place, where only the high priest could enter. Its location symbolizes intercession: standing between the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place, it represents prayer ascending to God's throne.
Aaron is instructed to burn sweet incense each morning and evening as a perpetual offering (verses 7–8). This daily rhythm of intercession reflects the constancy of priestly prayer. Significantly, no strange incense, burnt offerings, or drink offerings were permitted on this altar (verse 9)—it was devoted exclusively to incense. Once yearly, the high priest would make atonement on its horns with the blood of the sin offering (verse 10), emphasizing that even the instruments of worship require cleansing.
Application: Incense in Scripture often symbolizes prayer rising before God (Psalm 141:2; Revelation 5:8). We are called to offer continual prayer and intercession, recognizing that our prayers—made possible through Christ our High Priest—ascend as a pleasing aroma before the Father.
When numbering the people, each male from twenty years and upward must give a half-shekel as a ransom for his soul (verses 12–14). Significantly, this tax is the same for rich and poor alike—a powerful statement of human equality before God (verse 15). This money supports the tabernacle's service and serves as a memorial before the Lord (verse 16).
The ransom concept is profound: each person's soul requires redemption. This foreshadows the truth that our salvation is not earned through wealth or status, but requires the payment of a price—ultimately fulfilled in Christ's ransom at Calvary (1 Timothy 2:5–6).
The Lord instructs Moses to make a laver (washing basin) of bronze, placed between the tabernacle and altar. Aaron and his sons must wash their hands and feet before entering the tabernacle or ministering at the altar, that they die not (verses 19–20).
This washing emphasizes ritual purity as essential to approaching God's presence. The water speaks of cleansing and purification. For the New Testament believer, this prefigures our cleansing through Christ's blood and the Holy Spirit's sanctifying work (Titus 3:5; Hebrews 10:22).
The Lord prescribes exact recipes for holy anointing oil (verses 23–25) and holy incense (verses 34–35), composed of specific spices in precise proportions. These were to anoint the tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priests themselves (verses 26–30), setting them apart as most holy. Critically, no one was permitted to make or use these for personal purposes—violation meant being cut off from the people (verses 32–33, 37–38).
This severe restriction teaches that God's holy things belong to Him alone and must be treated with reverence. The anointing oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit's consecrating power, setting apart vessels and people for God's service.
Exodus 30 reminds us that authentic worship demands intentionality, purity, and reverence. As believers, we are living temples (1 Corinthians 6:19), anointed with the Holy Spirit and called to offer our bodies as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). We approach God's throne through Jesus, our perfect High Priest, whose intercession never ceases. Let us guard the holiness of our worship, maintain purity of heart, and recognize that every aspect of our service—our prayers, our giving, our devotion—belongs wholly to the Lord.
