Exodus 40

Exodus 40 marks the glorious completion and dedication of the tabernacle, the portable tent of worship that God had commanded Israel to build. After nearly the entire book of Exodus has been devoted to the detailed instructions for the tabernacle's construction and the consecration of the priesthood, this final chapter shows us those instructions being faithfully executed by Moses. The chapter culminates in one of the most dramatic moments in Israel's history: the visible presence of God—His shekinah glory—descends upon the newly completed sanctuary, filling it with such power that even Moses cannot enter. This chapter teaches us the importance of obedience, the holiness of God, and the reality that when we prepare a place for God's presence, He honors us with His manifest glory.

The Lord gives Moses detailed instructions to set up the tabernacle on the first day of the first month, which marks the anniversary of the Exodus itself—a fitting time for this dedication. Moses is commanded to place the furniture in its proper order: the ark of the testimony in the Holy of Holies (behind the veil), the table of showbread on the north side, the candlestick on the south side, and the altar of incense before the veil. Each item represents a vital aspect of Israel's worship and communion with God.

Verses 9-11 emphasize the anointing and sanctification of the tabernacle and its furnishings with holy oil. This was not merely a symbolic gesture; in Scripture, anointing represents God's setting apart something or someone for His exclusive use and empowering. The altar of burnt offering receives special designation as "an altar most holy" (verse 10), highlighting that this is where God's wrath against sin would be propitiated through sacrifice—a profound foreshadowing of Christ's work on the cross.

Just as the tabernacle and its vessels are consecrated, so too are Aaron and his sons set apart for priestly ministry. They are washed with water (verse 12), clothed in holy garments, and anointed with the same sacred oil. God declares that this priesthood will be "everlasting" throughout their generations (verse 15). While the Levitical priesthood was indeed temporary, it pointed forward to the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ, our great High Priest who never ceases to intercede for us (Hebrews 7:24-25).

The phrase "Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he" (verse 16) is crucial. After all the detailed instructions in previous chapters, we see complete, meticulous obedience. Every piece of furniture is positioned correctly, the testimony (the Ten Commandments) is placed in the ark, the candlestick is lit, and incense is burned. Moses finishes the work (verse 33), not with carelessness, but with precision and reverence. This reminds us that obedience is not optional in the Christian life; it is how we honor God and prepare ourselves to receive His blessing.

The climax arrives when the cloud of the Lord's glory fills the tabernacle so completely that Moses himself cannot enter (verses 34-35). This is the shekinah—God's manifest presence among His people. The cloud becomes Israel's guide: when it lifts, they journey; when it remains, they stay (verses 36-37). Day and night, the cloud and fire hover over the tabernacle "in the sight of all the house of Israel" (verse 38), a constant reminder of God's presence and faithfulness.
