Study Notes — Exodus 38
5 sectionsExodus 38 completes the detailed account of the tabernacle's construction by describing the finishing of the outer courtyard and its furnishings, along with a comprehensive summary of all materials and craftsmen involved. This chapter focuses on the practical, structural elements—the altar of burnt offering, the bronze laver, the court's layout and dimensions, and the accounting of precious metals donated by the congregation. Through these specifications, we see both the meticulous care God demands in worship and the generous response of His people to His call.
Bezalel constructs the central piece of the tabernacle courtyard: a square altar made of acacia wood, overlaid with bronze. At five cubits per side and three cubits high, it was substantial and visible. The four horns projecting from its corners were places of refuge and atonement (see Psalm 118:27). All its vessels—pots, shovels, basins, forks, and firepans—were also bronze, chosen for its heat-resistance. The bronze grate beneath allowed ashes to fall through, and carrying rings enabled the Levites to transport it during Israel's wilderness wanderings. This portable design reflects God's desire to dwell among His people wherever they journeyed. The altar's construction teaches us that true worship requires both careful preparation and readiness to follow God's leading.
The laver—a large basin for washing—was fashioned from bronze mirrors donated by the women of Israel. This beautiful detail reveals generous sacrifice: these mirrors represented personal adornment, offered for the sanctuary's service. Priests would use this laver to wash before approaching God, symbolizing ceremonial cleansing and spiritual preparation. In New Testament terms, this foreshadows our need for ongoing sanctification through Christ's work (Ephesians 5:26).
The courtyard formed a rectangular enclosure, approximately 150 feet long and 75 feet wide, surrounded by fine linen hangings. The south and north sides required 100 cubits each; the west side 50 cubits; and the east side—with its ornate gate entrance—was similarly 50 cubits wide. The gate itself displayed beautiful needlework in blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen, creating a striking, visible entrance. All structural elements—pillars, sockets, hooks, and capitals—were made from bronze (foundation) and silver (ornamentation), demonstrating both strength and beauty. This orderly, bounded space teaches that God's worship has proper structure and boundaries, and that approach to Him requires passing through designated entry points.
The final verses provide a full accounting of resources. Under the supervision of Ithamar (Aaron's son) and the brilliant craftsmanship of Bezalel and Aholiab, the work was completed. The congregation's freewill offerings totaled twenty-nine talents of gold, one hundred talents of silver (collected as half-shekel from over 600,000 men), and seventy talents of bronze. Every shekel was accounted for and purposefully applied. This financial transparency and stewardship reflect the importance of faithful administration in God's work. Nothing was wasted; all resources glorified the Lord.
Though we no longer offer animal sacrifices—Christ is our perfect sacrifice—Exodus 38 reminds us that worship requires both our wholehearted attention and our material generosity. Just as Israel gave willingly to build God's dwelling place, we are called to give to His kingdom work, whether through tithes, offerings, or service. Let us approach God's house with reverence, remembering that the God who once required precise measurements and beautiful materials still desires our best—not out of external obligation, but from hearts overflowing with gratitude for His grace.
