Study Notes — Jeremiah 36
6 sectionsJeremiah 36 records one of the most dramatic confrontations between God's word and human rebellion in all of Scripture. The LORD commands Jeremiah to write down all His messages of judgment on a scroll and have them publicly read to the people of Judah, hoping they will repent. When King Jehoiakim hears the scroll read, he responds not with repentance but with defiance, cutting it to pieces and burning it in his fireplace. Yet God's word cannot be destroyed: He commands Jeremiah to write it all again, and adds a personal word of judgment against the king himself. This chapter powerfully demonstrates both the indestructibility of God's word and the futility of human resistance to His purposes.
In the fourth year of King Jehoiakim's reign, God instructs Jeremiah to take a scroll and write down all the divine messages he has received since the days of King Josiah. The purpose is pastoral: God hopes the people will hear these warnings of judgment and repent, turning from their evil ways so He can forgive them (verse 3). Jeremiah, prevented from entering the temple (perhaps due to his unpopularity or a specific restriction), enlists his faithful scribe Baruch to write the words from his dictation. This introduces us to Baruch, who becomes Jeremiah's loyal companion in ministry. The detail about Jeremiah's confinement reminds us that faithful prophets often face opposition and restrictions, yet God's purposes are never thwarted.
Jeremiah sends Baruch to read the scroll publicly in the temple during a solemn fast day. The strategy is wise: a fast indicated times of prayer and repentance, so the spiritual atmosphere was right for people to hear God's call to turn from their evil ways (verse 7). The text emphasizes that Baruch faithfully carried out the instructions, reading in the chamber of Gemariah, where many people would hear. God's word was thus made available to all—rich and poor, officials and commoners—who visited Jerusalem.
When Michaiah, the son of Gemariah, hears the scroll and reports it to the princes gathered in the king's house, their reaction shows a mixture of fear and prudence. They are afraid when they hear God's judgment against Judah (verse 16), and they wisely warn Baruch and Jeremiah to hide. Significantly, they recognize that the king needs to know of these messages, yet they also recognize the danger. Their fear reveals a proper respect for God's word, even if their faith remains incomplete. They question Baruch about how the words came to him (verses 17–18), and his straightforward answer—that Jeremiah spoke them and he wrote them in ink—establishes the credibility of the message.
King Jehoiakim's response is the opposite of repentance. As Jehudi reads the scroll to him, the king systematically cuts it up and burns it piece by piece (verse 23), a symbolic act of contempt toward God's word. Shockingly, neither the king nor his servants show any fear or remorse. Even the princes' intercession falls on deaf ears (verse 25). The king then orders the arrest of Baruch and Jeremiah, but the LORD hides them—a reminder that God sovereignly protects His servants and ensures His word continues despite human opposition.
God's final word is decisive. He commands Jeremiah to write the scroll again, with additional words added (verse 32). Jehoiakim's attempted destruction of God's word only proves the permanence of Scripture. Moreover, God pronounces a specific judgment: the king will have no heir on David's throne, and his corpse will be exposed to the elements (verses 29–31). This chapter closes with the profound truth that God's word cannot be silenced, burned, or defeated by human pride.
We live in an age when God's word is attacked, dismissed, and ignored by many. Yet Jeremiah 36 assures us that the Bible's authority rests not on human approval but on the character of God Himself. Our task, like Baruch's, is to faithfully deliver God's word in our generation, trusting that no amount of cultural hostility, institutional opposition, or personal rejection can stop the purposes of the Almighty. When we encounter resistance to Scripture, we remember Jehoiakim and take courage: the word will outlast all opponents.
