Jeremiah 28
Study Notes — Jeremiah 27
6 sectionsJeremiah 27 presents one of the most challenging and counter-intuitive messages in Scripture. The prophet is commanded to wear a yoke—a symbol of bondage—and to urge the surrounding nations, and even Judah itself, to submit to Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. This is not a message of political defeat, but of divine sovereignty. God uses this chapter to reveal that submission to His appointed judgment is the only path to survival and eventual restoration. The true enemy is not Babylon, but the false prophets who promise deliverance while leading people away from God's will.
Jeremiah receives a striking command: to make and wear bonds and yokes, then send copies to neighboring kings through messengers visiting Zedekiah. The visual symbol of the yoke was meant to communicate a hard truth. Before delivering this message, God establishes His absolute authority: "I have made the earth, the man and the beast" (v. 5). This foundation is essential. God is not reluctantly handing nations over to Babylon; He is exercising His sovereign prerogative to direct history according to His purposes. Every ruler, every kingdom, belongs ultimately to the God who created all things.
God calls Nebuchadnezzar "my servant" (v. 6)—a title that does not mean Nebuchadnezzar knows or worships the true God, but that he is being used by God as an instrument of judgment. All nations will serve Babylon's king and his successors, but this subjection has a term: "until the very time of his land come" (v. 7). God's judgment is neither eternal nor meaningless; it has a season and a purpose. Nations that refuse this yoke will face "the sword, and famine, and pestilence" (v. 8)—the classic trio of covenant curses. Resistance to God's appointed judgment compounds the judgment itself.
Here lies the real spiritual battle. False prophets, diviners, and sorcerers are telling people what they want to hear: that they need not serve Babylon. But God declares these prophets are liars, leading people "far from your land" (v. 10). The path to remaining "in their own land" (v. 11) is counterintuitive: submission to the yoke. This is a profound principle—obedience to God's will, even when it seems humiliating, preserves life; false comfort from false prophets leads to destruction.
Jeremiah directly addresses the king with the same message: "Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him... and live" (v. 12). The choice is starkly framed: submission brings life; resistance brings death. Verses 14–15 reinforce the warning: the false prophets have "not" been sent by God. They speak in His name without His commission—the definition of spiritual fraud.
Even the priests and people are deceived, imagining the sacred temple vessels will soon return from Babylon. Jeremiah offers a test: if these prophets are truly God's messengers, let them "make intercession to the LORD of hosts" (v. 18) for the vessels' safety. The answer comes in verses 19–22: the remaining vessels "shall be carried to Babylon" (v. 22), but with a promise—God will eventually restore them. Even in judgment, God secures redemption.
We live in an age of competing voices and easy comfort. Jeremiah 27 teaches us to test all messages—especially those promising painless solutions—against God's Word. True prophets sometimes call us to difficult obedience; false ones always flatter. Our trust must rest on God's sovereignty and wisdom, not on what feels good. When we align with God's will, even through hardship, we find preservation and hope.
