Study Notes — Jeremiah 2
6 sectionsJeremiah 2 is a passionate courtroom plea from God to His unfaithful people. The Lord begins by reminding Israel of their early devotion and covenant love, then systematically exposes their inexplicable abandonment of Him for worthless idols. Through vivid imagery and rhetorical questions, God reveals the absurdity of Israel's spiritual adultery: they have exchanged the living God—the fountain of living waters—for broken cisterns that cannot hold water. This chapter is a call to repentance grounded in the memory of God's faithfulness and the reality of His broken heart over His people's betrayal.
God commands Jeremiah to announce His complaint to Jerusalem. He begins not with judgment but with affection, remembering Israel's "kindness of youth" and "love of espousals"—their early wilderness wanderings when they followed Him completely (v. 2). Israel had been set apart as "holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase" (v. 3), consecrated and precious. This opening establishes that God's case against them is not harsh or arbitrary; it flows from the tenderness of covenant love. The promise in verse 3 assures that those who devour God's people will face His judgment, anchoring Israel's hope in His protective care.
God poses the central rhetorical question of the chapter: "What iniquity have your fathers found in me?" (v. 5). This is not a request for information; it exposes the absurdity of Israel's departure. They have found no fault in the Lord—He is faultless—yet they have "walked after vanity, and are become vain" (v. 5). Verses 6–7 recount His mighty acts: delivering them from Egypt, guiding them through wilderness, and giving them a plentiful land. Yet upon entering, they "defiled my land" (v. 7). The spiritual leaders—priests, lawyers, pastors, and prophets—failed in their responsibility; they did not ask, "Where is the LORD?" (v. 8) but instead "prophesied by Baal." God's patience remains evident in verse 9: despite this, He will "yet plead" with them and their descendants, offering repeated opportunities for repentance.
God calls upon creation itself to witness Israel's unprecedented sin. Even pagan nations do not abandon their gods (vv. 10–11), yet Israel has "changed [their] glory for that which doth not profit." Verse 13 contains the chapter's most memorable image: Israel has committed "two evils"—forsaking "the fountain of living waters" and hewing out "broken cisterns, that can hold no water." This captures the tragedy perfectly: they have rejected the only source of true life for empty, useless substitutes. The heavens are called to "be astonished" and "horribly afraid" at this spiritual perversion (v. 12).
Israel's predicament raises a troubling question: why does a people once free now experience spoiling and destruction? (v. 14–15). The answer unfolds across verses 17–19: "Thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God." Their "own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee" (v. 19). Despite God's earlier liberation (v. 20), Israel immediately turned to idolatry on "every high hill and under every green tree" (v. 20)—imagery suggesting widespread, unrepentant spiritual unfaithfulness. Verses 23–25 use animal imagery: Israel is like a swift camel or wild donkey in heat, utterly driven by appetite and impossible to restrain.
Israel's shame is comprehensive—kings, princes, priests, prophets, all caught in idolatry (v. 26). Ironically, in trouble they cry to God (v. 27), yet their self-made gods cannot save them (v. 28). God's repeated judgment falls on those who reject correction (v. 30) and deny their sin (v. 35). The chapter closes with the hard word: the LORD has "rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them" (v. 37).
Jeremiah 2 warns us against spiritual amnesia and casual idolatry. We, too, can forget God's past faithfulness and chase empty substitutes—success, pleasure, relationships, or wealth—that promise fulfillment but deliver only emptiness. The remedy is remembrance: recall what Christ has done, return to the fountain of living water, and guard against the subtle ways we "change our glory" for that which does not profit. God's persistent pleading in this chapter reveals His heart; He desires our repentance and restoration, not our destruction.
