Jeremiah 29

Jeremiah 29 records a letter from the prophet to the Jewish exiles in Babylon, sent during the reign of King Zedekiah. Rather than promising immediate restoration, Jeremiah conveys God's surprising command: settle down, build lives, and pray for the city of your captivity, for seventy years must pass before return. The chapter also exposes false prophets among the exiles who were deceiving the people with promises of quick deliverance, and warns those remaining in Jerusalem of coming judgment. This passage reveals God's sovereignty over exile, His faithfulness to His people across generations, and His intolerance of false prophecy.

Jeremiah sends an official letter to the exiles—not just leaders but "all the people" taken by Nebuchadnezzar to Babylon. The text carefully notes this was after King Jeconiah and other nobles had already been deported (v. 2), indicating a second wave of captivity. The letter is delivered through official envoys sent by King Zedekiah himself (v. 3), lending it authentic weight. This demonstrates that even in exile, God's Word reaches His people through proper channels. God's command is startling: build houses, plant gardens, marry, and have children (vv. 5-6). This is not resignation but realism. The exiles must live as if they will be there for the long term—because they will. Moreover, they are called to "seek the peace of the city" and pray for Babylon (v. 7), their place of captivity. This counterintuitive instruction teaches that believers can serve God and contribute to their communities, even when circumstances seem unjust. Their own welfare is bound up with the welfare of the place where God has positioned them. It's a profound lesson in faithful presence.

God explicitly warns the exiles not to listen to false prophets and diviners claiming to speak in His name (vv. 8-9). These deceivers were likely promising swift return—telling people what they wanted to hear rather than what God had decreed. Instead, God reassures them: after seventy years, He will visit them with thoughts of peace, not of evil (vv. 10-11). This is one of Scripture's most beloved verses for those in difficulty. God's plans are purposeful and redemptive. The exile is real, but it is not punishment without purpose; it is discipline with an "expected end"—a future and a hope.

When the exiles call upon God and pray with wholehearted sincerity, He will hear them (vv. 12-13). This establishes a vital pattern: seeking God with all one's heart results in finding Him. The promise of restoration includes gathering them "from all the nations" and bringing them back to their land (v. 14). Though this prophecy primarily concerns the literal return from Babylon, it echoes the greater theme of redemption—God always preserves a faithful remnant and restores them to blessing.

The chapter concludes with God's judgment on specific false prophets in Babylon (Ahab and Zedekiah, vv. 21-23) and Shemaiah back in Jerusalem (vv. 24-32), who opposed Jeremiah's true message. These men shall be exposed and punished. God's Word proves true; false prophecy collapses under divine judgment. This demonstrates that truth ultimately prevails over deception.
