Isaiah 6
Study Notes — Isaiah 5
4 sectionsIsaiah 5 presents one of Scripture's most powerful parables of judgment, depicting Israel as a vineyard that has failed to produce the fruit God expected. Through vivid imagery, the prophet indicts the nation for injustice, greed, drunkenness, and moral corruption, announcing that God will withdraw His protection and allow foreign invasion. This chapter masterfully blends a love song turned lament with a series of "woe" pronouncements, showing that divine judgment always follows persistent rejection of God's law and righteousness.
Isaiah begins with a tender song about God's vineyard—a poetic device that would have resonated deeply with his Judean audience. God is portrayed as a devoted farmer who has done everything necessary for His vineyard to thrive: He chose a fertile location (verse 1), cleared the land, planted premium vines, built protective structures, and prepared equipment for harvest (verse 2). Yet despite this lavish care, the vineyard produced only wild grapes—worthless fruit instead of the good harvest He anticipated (verse 2).
In verse 3, Isaiah invites his listeners to serve as judges in God's case against the vineyard. Verse 4 poses a rhetorical question that emphasizes God's faithfulness and the vineyard's inexplicable failure: "What could have been done more?" This is not a failure on God's part, but a failure of the people to respond to His blessing with obedience. Verse 7 unveils the parable's meaning explicitly: the vineyard is the house of Israel, and God looked for judgment and righteousness but found oppression and injustice instead. The contrast is stark and sorrowful.
Having established the verdict, Isaiah pronounces a series of "woe" judgments targeting specific sins. Verses 8–10 condemn greedy land-grabbing and the wealthy elite who consolidate property while displacing the poor—a direct violation of God's covenant concern for justice. Verses 11–12 target drunkenness and revelry, noting that those who pursue sensual pleasure fail to regard God's works or contemplate His sovereignty. Verse 13 reveals the spiritual root: the people lack knowledge—not intellectual knowledge, but covenantal knowledge of who God is and what He demands.
Verses 14–16 describe the horrific consequences: captivity, famine, and social collapse. The grave (Sheol) opens wide to receive the proud and exalted. Yet remarkably, verse 16 pivots to God's vindication: the LORD is exalted in judgment, and God the Holy One is sanctified in righteousness. Even in wrath, God demonstrates His holiness and justice. The reference to lambs and waste places (verse 17) likely points to restoration for the remnant that survives judgment.
Verses 18–24 contain five woe pronouncements against specific evils: deliberate sinfulness (18–19), moral inversion that calls evil good (20), prideful self-reliance (21), drunken strength (22), and judicial corruption (23). Each represents a fundamental rejection of God's moral order. Verse 24 warns that such rebellion results in utter destruction—root and blossom consumed like stubble in fire.
Verses 25–30 describe God's instrument of judgment: a distant nation He summons to invade Judah. This army is unstoppable, tireless, and equipped for total war. The imagery of lions roaring and darkness covering the land (verses 29–30) conveys both the ferocity of the invasion and the spiritual darkness that accompanies God's judgment.
Isaiah 5 reminds us that God's grace is never cheap, and His patience is not infinite. He invests lavishly in His people and expects a return of genuine obedience, justice, and worship. We must examine our own hearts: Do we pursue righteousness and mercy, or compromise with worldly values? Do we honor God's law, or redefine morality to suit our preferences? The chapter calls us to repentance while God's hand is still extended—before judgment falls.
