Study Notes — Isaiah 37
7 sectionsIsaiah 37 records one of the most dramatic moments in biblical history: King Hezekiah's prayer in the face of overwhelming military threat from Assyria's King Sennacherib. After initial intimidation through Rabshakeh's blasphemous threats, Hezekiah turns to God in prayer rather than to military or political solutions. The chapter demonstrates that genuine faith trusts God's character and sovereignty, even when circumstances appear hopeless, and concludes with God's miraculous deliverance—a powerful testimony to His faithfulness and absolute control over the nations.
When Hezekiah learns of Rabshakeh's taunting message, he responds not with panic but with prayer. His tearing of clothes and covering with sackcloth (v. 1) express genuine spiritual desperation rather than mere theatrics. Significantly, he goes to the house of the LORD—his first instinct is worship, not warfare. He sends his officials to Isaiah the prophet with a poignant request: "lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left" (v. 4). The phrase "remnant that is left" reminds us that Judah has already suffered greatly; this is their final hope. Hezekiah recognizes that human strength has reached its limit ("there is not strength to bring forth," v. 3), and only God can intervene.
Isaiah's immediate response carries God's authoritative word: "Be not afraid" (v. 6). This is not presumptuous optimism but rests on God's explicit promise. The LORD pledges to send "a blast upon him" and promises that Sennacherib will hear rumors forcing his return and eventual death in his own land (v. 7). Notice the specificity: God will accomplish this through natural means (rumors prompting military withdrawal) and divine judgment (death by the sword). Verse 8 begins the fulfillment, as Rabshakeh returns to find Sennacherib already engaged elsewhere, indicating the campaign's momentum has shifted.
Learning of Tirhakah of Ethiopia's approach, Sennacherib grows desperate and sends a final, scornful message to Hezekiah. His taunt systematically challenges faith: other gods have not delivered their nations (vv. 11-13), so why should Hezekiah trust in his God? This represents the world's logical argument against faith—it appeals to visible evidence while dismissing invisible realities. The enemy's boasting over the destruction of other lands and gods ironically proves these were not true gods at all (v. 19 confirms this later).
Rather than answer the threat militarily or politically, Hezekiah takes the letter into the LORD's house and spreads it before Him (v. 14)—a beautiful picture of bringing our deepest anxieties directly to God. His prayer grounds itself in God's sovereignty (He alone is God of all kingdoms, v. 16), creatorship (He made heaven and earth, v. 16), and holiness (He is the living God, v. 17). Hezekiah appeals not for national survival but for God's glory: "that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD" (v. 20). This is prayer aligned with God's ultimate purposes.
God responds through Isaiah with mocking language: Jerusalem "hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn" (v. 22). God then directly addresses Sennacherib, listing his proud boasts of conquest (vv. 23-25) and reminding him that God alone ordained these victories for His purposes (v. 26). Human pride blinds leaders to God's ultimate control. Verses 30-32 promise restoration: a three-year cycle of supernatural recovery and a surviving remnant that "shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward" (v. 31)—depicting organic, genuine renewal orchestrated by "the zeal of the LORD of hosts."
The promise is absolute: Sennacherib "shall not come into this city" (v. 33). God's motivation is threefold: His own reputation, His covenant with David, and His purposes for Jerusalem. Verse 36 records the miracle: God's angel strikes down 185,000 Assyrians in a single night. The chapter closes with poetic justice—Sennacherib, spared in battle, is murdered by his own sons while worshipping his false god (v. 38).
Like Hezekiah, believers today face situations where human resources seem insufficient. Isaiah 37 teaches us that our response should mirror his: acknowledge our weakness honestly, bring our burdens to God's house in prayer, ground our trust in God's character rather than circumstances, and seek His glory
