The text then lists Aaron's four sons, but immediately introduces a sobering reality: Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord for offering "strange fire"—unauthorized worship (Leviticus 10). This tragic event reminds us that approach to God requires reverence and obedience. Only Eleazar and Ithamar survived to serve in the priestly office. Application: Worship must honor God's standards, not our preferences. We serve a holy God who takes His worship seriously.

God commands Moses to bring the tribe of Levi near to Aaron, positioning them as assistants to the priesthood. The Levites were to "keep his charge" and manage all aspects of tabernacle service and maintenance. Verse 9 emphasizes their status: "they are wholly given unto him"—the Levites belonged entirely to Aaron and his sons for the work of ministry. Verse 10 stresses the exclusive nature of priestly work: only Aaron and his sons could approach the sanctuary; laypeople who attempted this would face death. Application: God desires our complete dedication to His service, and access to His presence comes through His appointed channels—now through Christ, our great High Priest.

Here we find the theological heart of the chapter. God explains that the Levites are taken "instead of all the firstborn" of Israel. This substitution echoes the Passover: when God struck down Egypt's firstborn, He consecrated all Israelite firstborn to Himself (verse 13). Rather than requiring every firstborn male to serve the sanctuary—which would be impractical—God accepted the Levites in their place. This is profoundly typological: just as the Levites stood in place of the firstborn, Christ stands in place of all believers, offering Himself as the ultimate sacrifice and redemption. Application: We are redeemed not by our own merit but by substitution. Christ's death in our place is the Christian's deepest hope.

Moses counts the Levites by family: Gershon (7,500), Kohath (8,600), and Merari (6,200), totaling 22,000. Each family received distinct assignments. The Gershonites cared for the tabernacle's outer coverings and hangings; the Kohathites (including Moses' own family through Amram) guarded the holiest items—the ark, table, and lampstand; the Merarites maintained the structural elements: boards, bars, and pillars. Each family pitched at a specific location around the tabernacle, with Moses, Aaron, and his sons guarding the eastern entrance. This organization reflects God's order and each family's role in maintaining His holy dwelling.

Moses counts Israel's firstborn males: 22,273, exceeding the 22,000 Levites. For the 273 extras, redemption money of five shekels per person was collected and given to Aaron. This redemption system demonstrates that even those beyond the Levitical substitution remained under God's claim and required payment for release. Application: Every life has infinite worth to God and requires redemption. This foreshadows the price of our redemption in Christ—not silver or gold, but His precious blood.
