Numbers 28

Numbers 28 contains the Lord's detailed instructions to Moses concerning the regular sacrificial offerings that Israel was to present throughout the year. This chapter establishes a comprehensive liturgical calendar, specifying daily burnt offerings, Sabbath observances, monthly sacrifices, and the major feasts. The repeated emphasis on offerings made "of a sweet savour unto the LORD" underscores the central purpose of these rituals: to maintain Israel's covenant relationship with God through consistent, prescribed worship. These instructions reveal God's desire for orderly, reverent communion with His people and prefigure the perfect sacrifice of Christ.

The Lord commands Moses to instruct Israel to maintain the daily burnt offering—two lambs without blemish, offered morning and evening. Each lamb is accompanied by a grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil and a drink offering of wine. This "continual burnt offering" (Hebrew olat tamid) was the foundation of Israel's worship life, offered without fail regardless of other festivals or circumstances. The morning and evening sacrifices bookended each day, symbolizing that worship and devotion to the Lord should frame all daily activities. Practically, this teaches us that consistent, daily communion with God—through prayer, Scripture, and worship—should be the foundation of our spiritual lives, not something reserved only for special occasions.

On the seventh day, Israel was to present an additional burnt offering of two lambs, along with grain and drink offerings, in addition to the regular continual offering. This doubling of the sacrifice on the Sabbath emphasized the holiness of God's day of rest and reminded Israel that rest itself is a form of worship and obedience. The Sabbath was not a day when worship ceased but when it was elevated and deepened. This principle carries forward in the New Testament: our worship should be continuous, but we are also called to set apart dedicated time for focused devotion to our Savior.

At the beginning of each new month, a more substantial sacrifice was offered: two young bulls, one ram, and seven lambs, with corresponding grain and drink offerings, plus a sin offering. The escalation from the daily lambs to monthly bulls reflects the varying intensity of worship throughout the liturgical cycle. The inclusion of a sin offering acknowledges human failure and the need for atonement. This reminds believers that our worship must always incorporate confession and repentance, recognizing our dependence on God's mercy.

The Passover and the following seven-day Feast of Unleavened Bread are outlined with their associated sacrifices. During these seven days, specific burnt offerings, grain offerings, and sin offerings were to be presented daily. The feast commemorated Israel's deliverance from Egypt and called them to holy living through the removal of leaven (symbolizing sin). For Christians, this feast points to Christ our Passover Lamb, whose blood delivers us from judgment, and whose resurrection begins our journey into sanctification.

The final festival described is the Feast of Firstfruits (Pentecost), celebrated after seven weeks, when Israel brought the first of the harvest. The sacrifices paralleled those of other major feasts, emphasizing that thanksgiving for God's provision should be accompanied by formal, reverent worship. This feast ultimately foreshadows Pentecost in Acts, when the Holy Spirit was given as the firstfruits of God's promise to believers.
