Study Notes — Numbers 21
5 sectionsNumbers 21 chronicles Israel's wilderness journey as they approach the Promised Land, highlighting both their persistent struggle with faith and God's unwavering faithfulness. The chapter records military victories against enemies who opposed their passage, divine judgment upon Israel's complaining, and a remarkable provision of water in the desert. Most significantly, this passage contains the account of the bronze serpent—a profound type and shadow of Christ's redemptive work—demonstrating that even in seasons of discipline, God's mercy is available to all who look to Him in faith.
When King Arad of Canaan hears that Israel approaches, he attacks and takes prisoners. Rather than despair, Israel makes a conditional vow to the Lord: "If you deliver these people into our hand, we will utterly destroy their cities." God honors this prayer-vow and grants Israel victory. The place is named Hormah (meaning "devoted to destruction"), commemorating both Israel's faith and God's response. This opening victory reminds us that God hears the prayers of His people and responds to faith-filled requests, even when circumstances seem dire.
After leaving Mount Hor, Israel's discouragement grows as they journey around Edom's border (verses 4–5). They complain bitterly: "Why have you brought us to die in the wilderness? We have no bread, no water, and we despise this manna." God's response is both stern and merciful—He sends fiery serpents that bite the people, and many die (verse 6). This is divine discipline for rebellion against God and Moses. When the people repent and confess their sin (verse 7), Moses intercedes on their behalf. God then commands Moses to fashion a bronze serpent and place it on a pole. Whoever looks upon it in faith is healed (verses 8–9). This extraordinary provision reveals God's character: He judges sin seriously, but offers grace to the repentant. Jesus Himself later explains that He is the antitype of this bronze serpent—lifted up that all who believe might be saved (John 3:14–15). The serpent on the pole becomes a powerful symbol of substitutionary atonement and the healing power of Christ's sacrifice.
These verses document Israel's progression eastward through various locations: Oboth, Ijeabarim, the Valley of Zared, and beyond the Arnon River (the border of Moab). Verses 14–15 reference the "Book of the Wars of the Lord," an ancient historical record of God's mighty deeds. At Beer, God miraculously provides water, and the people sing a celebratory song: "Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it" (verses 16–17). The princes and leaders dig the well by divine direction, and Israel continues to Mattanah, Nahaliel, and Bamoth. These verses underscore God's guidance and provision throughout the journey—water in the desert, direction through unknown territory, and protection along the way. Each location represents another step toward the inheritance God promised.
Israel politely requests passage through the territory of Sihon, king of the Amorites, promising not to deviate into fields or drink from wells (verses 21–22). Sihon refuses and attacks (verse 23). Israel defeats him decisively and possesses his land (verses 24–26). Verses 27–30 preserve an ancient song celebrating this victory. Similarly, when Og of Bashan opposes Israel, the Lord assures Moses, "Fear him not; I have delivered him into your hand" (verse 34). Israel destroys Og and his entire people and possesses his land (verse 35). These twin victories demonstrate that God fights for His covenant people and removes obstacles to the fulfillment of His promises.
Numbers 21 teaches us that God responds to faith-filled prayer, disciplines sin lovingly, and provides healing through Christ alone. When we face spiritual opposition or struggle with doubt, we are invited—like Israel—to look upon Christ, the true Serpent lifted up, and live. Our journey toward spiritual maturity requires both obedience and trust in God's faithfulness.
