Study Notes — Psalms 68
5 sectionsPsalm 68 is a triumphant hymn celebrating God's power, deliverance, and righteous rule over all the earth. The psalmist opens with a prayer for God to arise against His enemies, then moves through vivid recollections of God's mighty acts in Israel's history—particularly the exodus and wilderness wanderings—before extending the vision to God's universal reign and the gathering of all nations to worship Him. This psalm emphasizes both God's justice toward the wicked and His tender compassion toward the vulnerable, painting a complete portrait of His character and sovereign authority.
The psalm begins with an urgent invocation: "Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered." This echoes the ancient prayer spoken when the ark of the covenant was carried into battle (Numbers 10:35), calling upon God to manifest His power against those who oppose Him. Verses 2-3 contrast sharply—the wicked will melt like wax before God's presence, yet the righteous will rejoice exceedingly. The psalmist emphasizes that God's justice brings gladness to those who love Him. In verses 4-5, we see God's character revealed: He is the one who rides upon the heavens (a title of majesty), called by His covenant name JAH, and He is uniquely characterized by compassion—He is "a father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows." Here we encounter the beautiful balance: God is terrible in power but tender in mercy toward the defenseless.
This section recounts God's historical faithfulness. He "setteth the solitary in families" and "bringeth out those which are bound with chains"—metaphors of spiritual and physical liberation. Verses 7-9 recall the wilderness journey when God led Israel before them, and creation itself responded with awe: "The earth shook, the heavens also dropped." The plentiful rain confirmed God's inheritance and cared for His weary people. Verses 11-12 celebrate how God's word, once proclaimed by His servants, brought victory so complete that even women at home could gather spoils of war. The emphasis is on God's sovereign Word accomplishing His purposes.
Verse 13 uses striking imagery—even lowly people ("lien among the pots") will be transformed into beauty, covered with silver and gold like a dove's wings. This speaks to God's redemptive power over our circumstances. Verses 15-16 focus on Zion, God's chosen dwelling place, distinguishing it from other high hills. God desires to dwell there forever. Verse 17 mentions "twenty thousand chariots of God," symbolizing His infinite angelic army and overwhelming power. Verse 18 is particularly significant for New Testament readers: "Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men." The apostle Paul applies this directly to Christ's ascension in Ephesians 4:8, showing how this psalm points to Jesus' victory over sin and death and His distribution of spiritual gifts to believers.
The psalm concludes with grateful praise: God "daily loadeth us with benefits" and is "the God of our salvation" (verses 19-20). He possesses "the issues from death"—authority over life and death itself. Verses 21-23 affirm God's judgment on the unrepentant, while verses 24-27 depict a worship procession with singers, musicians, and representatives from all Israel's tribes approaching God's sanctuary. The final verses (28-35) call for strength from God and envision kings from Egypt and Ethiopia bringing tribute to Jerusalem, ultimately inviting all kingdoms to sing praise to Him who rides "upon the heavens of heavens."
Psalm 68 reminds us that our God is both awesome in power and tender in compassion. He actively defends the vulnerable, answers prayer with decisive action, and invites all nations into His kingdom. As believers, we celebrate Christ's ascension as the ultimate fulfillment of verse 18—He has conquered death and freely distributes His grace to us. We are called to rejoice in His strength daily, rest in His care for the broken-hearted, and anticipate the day when all creation bows before His throne.
