Study Notes — Psalms 106
6 sectionsPsalm 106 is a sweeping historical meditation on Israel's repeated cycle of sin, judgment, and divine mercy. The psalmist begins with joyful praise for God's eternal goodness, then traces Israel's wilderness journey and settlement period, cataloging their failures—from golden calf worship to idolatry and covenant-breaking. Despite their rebellion, God's compassion never ceased; He repeatedly delivered them even when they deserved destruction. This psalm teaches that God's faithfulness and mercy transcend human unfaithfulness, and it calls the exiled community to repentance and renewed confidence in God's covenant promises.
The psalmist opens with a summons to praise, declaring that the LORD is good and His mercy endures forever (v. 1). This refrain echoes throughout the Psalter and anchors faith in God's unchanging character. Verse 2 poses a rhetorical question—who can fully recount God's mighty deeds?—acknowledging that His works exceed human comprehension. Verses 3–5 shift to a prayer: the writer asks God to remember him with the same favor shown to Israel, that he might witness God's goodness toward His people and rejoice in their blessing. This opening frames the entire psalm: praise emerges not from ignorance of sin, but from trust in God's character despite human failure.
The psalmist now confesses corporate sin (v. 6), identifying himself with Israel's ancient failures. He recalls how Israel witnessed God's wonders in Egypt yet quickly forgot His mercies and provoked Him at the Red Sea (v. 7). Yet God saved them for His name's sake (v. 8)—not because they deserved it, but to demonstrate His power. The miraculous drying of the sea and the destruction of Pharaoh's army (vv. 9–11) elicited temporary faith: the people sang God's praise (v. 12). This section illustrates a painful truth: spectacular displays of divine power can coexist with shallow faith and short memories.
Immediately after their deliverance, Israel forgot His works and lusted in the wilderness (vv. 13–14). God granted their selfish request but sent leanness into their souls—a sobering reminder that answered prayer without obedience brings spiritual emptiness. The rebellions multiply: envy against Moses and Aaron (v. 16), the golden calf at Horeb (vv. 19–22), and refusal to enter Canaan (vv. 24–25). Each sin deepened God's judgment. Yet even when God threatened destruction, Moses interceded in the breach (v. 23)—a picture of God's patience and the power of intercession. The divine sentence was executed: that generation perished in the wilderness, and even their descendants faced scattering among nations (vv. 26–27).
In Canaan, Israel repeated their ancient pattern: joining themselves to Baal worship (v. 28), sacrificing children to demons (vv. 37–38), and learning the detestable practices of surrounding nations (v. 35). God's wrath kindled against His own inheritance (v. 40). Yet even in exile, He never entirely abandoned them; He stirred compassion for them among their captors (v. 46) and delivered them repeatedly (v. 43).
Despite Israel's serial unfaithfulness, God remembered His covenant and repented according to the multitude of His mercies (v. 45). The psalm ends with a prayer for final restoration and doxological praise, affirming that God's faithfulness remains sure even when human faith falters.
Psalm 106 reassures us that our forgetting, stumbling, and slow hearts do not exhaust God's mercy. Like Israel, we believers often forget what God has done and gravitate toward spiritual compromise. Yet our security rests not on our consistency but on God's covenant love. We are called to remember His works, confess our sins honestly, and intercede for others—trusting that God's mercy toward us in Christ is as eternal and sure as it was toward repentant Israel.
