Study Notes — Psalms 22
4 sectionsPsalm 22 is perhaps the most profoundly messianic psalm in all of Scripture, a psalm of deep anguish that ultimately leads to triumph and praise. It begins with the cry of abandonment—"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"—and traces a journey from despair through suffering to restoration and cosmic worship. Though composed by David, this psalm finds its ultimate and complete fulfillment in the suffering and exaltation of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Every evangelical Christian should meditate upon this psalm as a window into Christ's crucifixion and the redemption He secured for us.
The psalmist opens with an anguished question that echoes across the ages: "Why hast thou forsaken me?" (verse 1). This is not the cry of a faithless person, but of one who knows God intimately and cannot understand His apparent silence. The sufferer cries out day and night without answer (verse 2), yet remembers that God is holy and inhabits the praises of His people (verse 3). Verses 4-5 ground the prayer in historical faith—the fathers trusted and were delivered. This balance between present pain and past faithfulness is crucial: the psalmist does not deny his suffering, but neither does he deny God's character. Application: When we face seasons of spiritual darkness, remembering God's faithfulness in our own past and in Scripture sustains us until the darkness lifts.
The psalm now descends into vivid descriptions of degradation and physical torment. The speaker is "a worm, and no man" (verse 6)—utterly dehumanized and despised. Those who see him mock him, shaking their heads and taunting him about his trust in the Lord (verses 7-8). Yet remarkably, verses 9-10 recall that this God has been his protector since birth. The imagery then intensifies: bulls encircle him (verse 12), he is poured out like water with bones out of joint (verse 14), his strength is gone and his mouth is dry (verse 15). Most strikingly, verse 16 speaks of pierced hands and feet, and verse 18 describes the casting of lots for his garments. These verses are explicitly fulfilled at Calvary. Jesus Christ experienced exactly this sequence of humiliation, mockery, physical agony, and the specific indignities of crucifixion. Application: Christ's willingness to endure such shame demonstrates the depth of His love for us and the costliness of our redemption.
A turning point arrives at verse 19: "Be not thou far from me, O LORD." The mood shifts from lament toward prayer and then to confident testimony. Verses 19-21 contain final petitions for deliverance, but verse 22 announces the resolution: "I will declare thy name unto my brethren." The psalmist moves from suffering to proclamation, calling all who fear the Lord to praise Him (verses 22-24). The remainder of the psalm (verses 25-31) expands into a vision of universal worship and blessing: the meek shall be satisfied, all nations shall remember and turn to the Lord, and the kingdom belongs eternally to God. This extraordinary conclusion—from the cross to cosmic redemption—mirrors Christ's exaltation and the future expansion of His kingdom throughout all creation.
As believers, Psalm 22 teaches us that Christ has already walked the path of ultimate suffering and abandonment on our behalf. When we face our own trials, we can bring them to God honestly, as the psalmist does, without pretense. More importantly, we worship a risen Savior who emerged from suffering into glory, and who invites us to share in His triumph. Let this psalm deepen your love for Christ's sacrifice and strengthen your confidence that God's kingdom will ultimately encompass all creation in worship and praise.
