Study Notes — Psalms 37
5 sectionsPsalm 37 is a wisdom psalm written by David to encourage believers facing the apparent success of the wicked and the injustice they experience in this world. The psalmist's central message is clear: do not be anxious or envious when evildoers prosper, because their days are numbered and God's ultimate justice is certain. Instead of fretting, believers are called to trust the Lord, do good, and wait patiently for His vindication. This psalm offers profound comfort to every generation of Christians who wonder why the godly suffer while the ungodly flourish.
David begins by addressing the believer's deepest temptation: fretting and envy when we see evildoers thriving. The command "fret not thyself" appears repeatedly throughout this psalm because anxiety and envy are the natural human responses to injustice. But the psalmist offers a better way: trust in the Lord, do good, dwell in the land, and be fed (verses 3-4). Notice verse 4's beautiful promise—when we delight ourselves in the Lord, He gives us the desires of our hearts, not as a reward for good behavior, but as the overflow of a rightly ordered life. The cure for envy is not denial of the problem, but redirection of our affection toward God Himself. Verse 5 caps this section with the assurance that when we commit our way to the Lord, He will bring it to pass.
The psalmist promises that God will bring forth our righteousness as the light and our judgment as the noonday (verse 6)—meaning He will make our vindication clear and undeniable when the time comes. We are called to "rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him" (verse 7), a theme reinforced in verse 9: "those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth." This is not passive inactivity but active trust paired with ceasing from anger and forsaking wrath (verse 8). The wicked may scheme against the righteous, but the Lord laughs at their plots because He already knows their end (verse 13). God's perspective transcends our temporal anxieties.
This section provides vivid reassurance that the wicked's judgment is certain. The sword they draw against the poor and needy shall pierce their own hearts (verse 15). Their own weapons will be turned against them. Verse 16 offers a pastoral observation: a little that the righteous have is better than the riches of many wicked, because their possessions are gained and held by dishonest means and will not endure. By contrast, the Lord upholds the righteous (verse 17). The wicked shall perish like smoke (verse 20)—completely and finally.
The final section emphasizes God's faithful care for the righteous and their descendants. The righteous show mercy and give generously (verse 21), their steps are ordered by the Lord (verse 23), and even when they fall, they are upheld (verse 24). David's personal testimony (verse 25) carries weight: in all his years, he has never seen the righteous forsaken. The wicked may spread like a flourishing tree, but they suddenly vanish (verses 35-36), while the righteous inherit the land and dwell there forever (verse 29). The psalm concludes with the assurance that the salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord (verse 39), and those who trust in Him will be delivered from the wicked.
When injustice seems to triumph and the wicked prosper while you suffer, Psalm 37 calls you to stop fretting and start trusting. Redirect your emotional energy from envy toward deepening your delight in God. Commit your situation to Him, wait patiently for His vindication, and rest assured that His justice is certain. Your inheritance is secure, and His care for you is eternal.
