Study Notes — Psalms 105
6 sectionsPsalm 105 is a triumphant hymn of remembrance that calls God's people to praise Him for His covenant faithfulness throughout history. The psalm traces God's dealings with Abraham, Joseph, and Israel, emphasizing how the Lord kept His promises despite centuries of waiting, hardship, and seeming delay. From the patriarchs through the Egyptian captivity and exodus, this passage demonstrates that God's word never fails and His memory never lapses. The underlying message is simple yet profound: when we remember what God has done, our faith is strengthened and our hearts are moved to worship.
The psalm opens with an exhortation to give thanks, call upon the Lord's name, and make His deeds known publicly (v. 1). Believers are urged to sing, speak of His wonders, and glory in His holy name (vv. 2–3). Notice the emphasis on remembrance: "Remember his marvellous works that he hath done" (v. 5). This is not mere nostalgic recollection but an active, faith-building discipline. When we remember God's past faithfulness—in our own lives and in Scripture—we strengthen our trust for the future. The practical takeaway is clear: testimony matters. Speaking of God's works to others reinforces our own faith and witnesses to His character.
Here the psalmist addresses Abraham's descendants and reminds them of the eternal covenant God made with their father (vv. 8–10). The Lord promised Abraham and his seed the land of Canaan as an everlasting inheritance (v. 11). What makes this striking is the contrast: "When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it" (v. 12). God did not delay fulfillment because His people were weak or insignificant. His promises depend on His power, not on human strength or numerical advantage. This reassures us that God's commitments to us do not hinge on our circumstances.
The psalm reminds us that during the patriarchal period, as Abraham's family wandered among nations, God protected them supernaturally (vv. 13–15). He even reproved kings on their behalf. Then the narrative shifts to Joseph, whose suffering—slavery and imprisonment—appears contradictory to divine care (vv. 17–19). Yet the Lord was working. "Until the time that his word came" (v. 19): Joseph's trial served a purpose. Eventually Pharaoh freed him and made him lord of Egypt (vv. 20–22). This teaches us that waiting on God's timing, even through hardship, leads to blessing. Joseph's imprisonment was not God's abandonment but His preparation.
The psalmist recounts Israel's sojourn in Egypt and God's miraculous deliverance through the ten plagues (vv. 23–36). Each plague—darkness, blood, frogs, flies, hail, locusts, and the death of the firstborn—is presented as God's direct action against Egypt's stubbornness. The Lord "spoke, and it came to pass" (vv. 31, 34). This demonstrates God's absolute sovereignty and His willingness to intervene decisively on behalf of His covenant people.
God brought Israel out with riches and health (v. 37), sustained them in the wilderness with cloud, fire, quail, and water from the rock (vv. 39–41), and gave them the promised land (v. 44). Yet the ultimate purpose was obedience: "That they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws" (v. 45). Blessing is never divorced from the call to holiness.
God's faithfulness in Scripture should anchor our faith today. When trials come, remember Joseph. When promises seem delayed, recall Abraham. When God's power feels distant, remember the plagues. Speak of His works to others, seek His face continually, and trust that He is working even in your waiting. Your obedience flows from remembering His covenant love.
