Study Notes — Psalms 107
7 sectionsPsalm 107 is a magnificent hymn of thanksgiving that celebrates God's faithful deliverance of His people from various forms of distress and danger. The psalm presents four vivid scenes of human crisis—wilderness wandering, imprisonment, sickness, and storm at sea—each followed by earnest prayer and God's gracious rescue. Through these recurring patterns, the psalmist teaches us that God's mercy is constant and His power is absolute, and that our proper response to His deliverance is public praise and grateful testimony. This psalm invites all who have experienced God's salvation to join in declaring His wonderful works.
The psalm opens with a ringing call to thanksgiving. God's goodness and eternal mercy are the foundational reasons for our praise. Verse 2 specifically addresses "the redeemed of the LORD"—those whom He has rescued "from the hand of the enemy." This speaks both to corporate deliverance (Israel's salvation from Egypt and exile) and to individual rescue from sin's bondage. Verse 3 mentions gathering from all directions (east, west, north, south), emphasizing that God's redemptive work extends to all people everywhere. The psalmist is calling the redeemed to give testimony—to speak openly about what God has done for them.
The first crisis scenario describes people wandering in desolate lands with no shelter or food, their strength failing from hunger and thirst. When they cry out to the Lord in their distress, He answers by leading them to a city of safety and habitation. Verse 9 reveals God's heart: He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry with good things. This reflects both physical provision and spiritual nourishment. The practical application is clear: when we find ourselves in seasons of spiritual or material emptiness, we must cry out to the Lord rather than rely on our own resources.
The second scenario depicts prisoners bound in darkness and chains—people who suffered these consequences because they "rebelled against the words of God" (verse 11). The psalm honestly acknowledges that affliction often results from our own sin and foolishness. Yet even here, when they cry to the Lord, He breaks their chains and brings them into light. Verse 16 uses powerful imagery: God breaks gates of brass and bars of iron. This speaks to the reality of sin's binding power and God's sovereign ability to liberate us through repentance and faith.
The third scene involves those afflicted by sickness—their appetite fails, they approach death's door. Again, the cycle repeats: they cry out, and God saves them by sending His word and healing them. Verse 20 is particularly significant: "He sent his word, and healed them." This points to the power of God's spoken word and ultimately foreshadows the healing and life-giving power of the Word made flesh in Christ. Verses 21-22 call for explicit thanksgiving and public declaration of God's works, not mere private gratitude but congregational praise.
The final crisis involves merchants on treacherous waters. God commands the wind and raises the waves; the sailors face terror and feel utterly helpless. When they cry out, God calms the storm and brings them safely to harbor. This section vividly illustrates that even life's most overwhelming circumstances—when we are "at our wit's end" (verse 27)—remain within God's control. Verses 31-32 expand the call to praise: thanksgiving should be expressed not only in private devotion but also in the congregation and among community elders.
The concluding section affirms God's total sovereignty over nature and human affairs. He transforms landscapes, blesses the faithful with increase, and humbles the proud. The final verses offer wisdom: those who observe these mighty works and God's lovingkindness will understand His character and respond with obedience and praise.
Psalm 107 teaches us that deliverance always begins with honest crying out to God. Whether we face wilderness seasons, bondage to sin, sickness, or overwhelming circumstances, our refuge is in prayer. The psalm also reminds us that receiving God's mercy carries an obligation to testify publicly to others about His goodness. Have you experienced God's deliverance? The psalmist invites you to "say so"—to declare His wonderful works to your congregation and community. This is how faith grows and others come to trust in the Lord.
