Chapter Commentary — Ezekiel 2
Chapter Overview

Chapter Overview

Ezekiel chapter 2 marks the beginning of the prophet's commissioning by God. After the overwhelming vision of God's glory in chapter 1, Ezekiel is called to stand and receive his prophetic mandate. God sends him to the people of Israel—a nation characterized by rebellion and spiritual hardness—with a message that they must hear, whether they respond or refuse. The chapter emphasizes both the difficulty of the prophetic calling and God's empowering presence, setting the pattern for faithful ministry even in the face of rejection.

Verses 1–2: Standing to Receive God's Word

After his encounter with God's throne-chariot, Ezekiel is instructed to stand on his feet so that he may hear the Lord's word. The Spirit enters him and physically sets him upright, enabling him to listen. This standing position signifies readiness and respect—a posture appropriate for receiving divine instruction. The emphasis on the Spirit's enabling work reminds us that spiritual responsiveness is never purely human effort; God's Spirit must empower us to truly hear and understand His voice. Before Ezekiel can minister to others, he must be positioned to receive from the Lord himself.

Verses 3–5: The Commission to a Rebellious People

God's call is direct: Ezekiel is sent to the children of Israel, described as "a rebellious nation" whose sin stretches back through generations ("they and their fathers have transgressed against me"). The people are characterized as "impudent" (shameless, brazen) and "stiffhearted" (hardened, resistant to correction). Yet remarkably, God's command to Ezekiel contains a guarantee: whether Israel hears or refuses to hear, they shall know that there hath been a prophet among them (verse 5). This means Ezekiel's ministry itself—his faithful proclamation—will serve as a sign and testimony. His faithfulness matters regardless of human response. This is profoundly encouraging: the prophet's worth is not measured by conversion numbers but by obedience to deliver God's message.

Verses 6–7: Courage in Hostile Territory

God now addresses the emotional weight of the calling. Ezekiel is told three times not to fear: "be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words" (verse 6), and again in verse 7. The vivid language—"briers and thorns," "scorpions"—paints a picture of a hostile, dangerous environment. Yet the command is clear: speak God's words "whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear." Obedience does not depend on favorable outcomes. This is a crucial word for every believer who has faced mockery, rejection, or social pressure for their faith. We are called to faithfulness, not to guaranteed success. God's presence and truth are sufficient armor against all intimidation.

Verses 8–10: Consuming God's Word

Before Ezekiel speaks to Israel, God tells him to listen and obey—not to become "rebellious like that rebellious house." Then a hand extends a scroll written inside and outside with "lamentations, and mourning, and woe." The prophet must eat this scroll. This symbolic action (described more fully in chapter 3) represents the internalization of God's message. A true prophet speaks only what he has received and absorbed from God Himself. The message is weighty and sorrowful, reflecting God's judgment on His people—yet it must be the prophet's own spiritual food before it becomes his proclamation.

Application for Today

God still calls His people to faithful witness in a resistant world. Whether you are a pastor, evangelist, parent, or everyday believer, your responsibility is to proclaim God's truth with courage and clarity. Success is not yours to measure—faithfulness is. Spend time in God's Word, let the Spirit empower you, and speak His truth regardless of the response. Remember: your consistency itself is a testimony.
