Study Notes — Deuteronomy 3
5 sectionsDeuteronomy 3 continues Israel's conquest narrative, documenting the defeat of Og, king of Bashan, and the distribution of conquered territory to the eastern tribes. This chapter exemplifies God's faithfulness in keeping His promises and demonstrates how His power operates through His people's obedience. Moses also records his personal request to enter the promised land and God's firm but loving refusal, reminding us that even leaders of great faith must accept God's sovereignty over their desires. The chapter closes with Moses' charge to Joshua, emphasizing that the same God who gave victory over two kings will sustain Israel through all future battles.
After defeating Sihon (chapter 2), Israel encounters Og, the last of the great giants still ruling in Canaan (v. 11). Despite Og's formidable stature—his iron bed measured nine by four cubits, roughly thirteen feet long—the Lord commands Moses: "Fear him not" (v. 2). God promises complete victory, and Israel responds in obedience. The destruction is thorough: sixty fortified cities fall, including the heavily defended capital at Edrei. Verses 6-7 note the complete destruction of the population but the preservation of livestock and plunder for Israel's use. This demonstrates that God's judgment upon the Canaanites was real and total, yet His provision for His people was generous.
Moses summarizes the vast territory now belonging to Israel: from the Arnon River to Mount Hermon, encompassing all the plains, Gilead, and Bashan (vv. 8-10). The distribution of this land reveals careful pastoral leadership. The Reubenites and Gadites receive territory east of Jordan suitable for their large herds (v. 12). The half-tribe of Manasseh receives Bashan, with Jair's family settling the region of Argob (vv. 13-15). These arrangements were practical—each tribe received land appropriate to their needs—yet they also had spiritual significance, as this distribution prefigured the full inheritance Israel would receive under Joshua. Verse 17 mentions the Dead Sea, called here "the sea of the plain," establishing geographical boundaries.
Moses commands the Reubenites and Gadites to cross Jordan armed alongside their brothers, leaving women, children, and livestock in fortified cities. This requirement (v. 18) emphasized that Israel's conquest was a corporate responsibility. No tribe could settle in isolation while others fought. The promise in verse 20 that they would return to their possession once the land was fully divided reveals God's commitment to fulfilling His covenants completely.
Moses explicitly commands Joshua, reminding him that the Lord who defeated two kings will defeat all enemies ahead (vv. 21-22). This is encouragement rooted in evidence. Then Moses records his personal prayer: he begs to enter the promised land, acknowledging God's greatness (vv. 23-25). God's response is firm: "Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter" (v. 26). Though Moses sinned at Meribah (Numbers 20) and must face consequence, God shows grace by granting him a view of the land from Pisgah's heights (v. 27). Moses obeys without bitterness, instead strengthening Joshua (v. 28). This teaches that submission to God's will, even when painful, is the pathway to blessing.
Deuteronomy 3 reminds us that God's promises are trustworthy and His power is absolute, yet He works through our faithful obedience and community. Like the Reubenites and Gadites, we cannot claim God's blessings while withdrawing from His work. And like Moses, we must trust that God's refusal of our requests often reflects deeper love and wisdom than granting them would. Our role is to obey, to encourage others in faith, and to rest in His sovereignty.
