Study Notes — Deuteronomy 2
5 sectionsDeuteronomy 2 describes Israel's wilderness wanderings and the beginning of their conquest east of the Jordan River. After forty years of judgment in the wilderness—during which the faithless generation died—Moses recounts God's specific instructions regarding neighboring nations and Israel's first military victories. The chapter demonstrates both God's patience with Israel and His justice in judgment, while also revealing His sovereignty over the nations and His faithfulness to complete His covenant promises.
Moses recalls how Israel journeyed through the wilderness near Mount Seir for many years. God then commanded them to turn northward, preparing to enter the promised land. Though they would pass through the territory of the Edomites (descendants of Esau), God explicitly forbade them to attack or provoke these relatives. Instead, Israel was to purchase food and water from the Edomites—a remarkable instruction that reveals God's respect for the rights of other nations and His design for peaceful commerce. Verse 7 is particularly moving: God reminds Israel that despite four decades in the desert, He had sustained them completely. They "lacked nothing." This is a powerful testimony to God's providential care, even during the wilderness season of judgment. The implication is clear: trust in the Lord's provision, not in self-sufficiency.
As Israel moves northward, Moses provides historical context about the nations they encounter. The Emims and Horims were giant peoples who previously inhabited these lands, but God removed them and gave their territories to the Moabites and Edomites respectively (verses 10-12). This sets a crucial precedent: God judges ungodly nations and replaces them with those He chooses. Verses 14-15 emphasize the completion of God's forty-year judgment: all the men of war from the faithless generation have now died in the wilderness, "as the LORD sware unto them." God's discipline was thorough and His word was certain. This sobering reality teaches that covenant unfaithfulness brings real consequences, but also that God's patience has limits.
Moses continues recounting how God had destroyed previous inhabitants of the lands surrounding Israel—the Zamzummims before the Ammonites, the Avims before the Caphtorims. By reciting these examples, Moses reassures the new generation that their coming conquest is not unique; God regularly judges nations and establishes new rulers. This provides theological confidence that Israel's conquest is righteous and divinely ordained, not merely human aggression.
Now the narrative shifts decisively. God tells Israel to cross the Arnon River and take the land of King Sihon the Amorite—here, conquest is commanded. Moses sent peaceful messengers requesting passage (verses 26-29), but Sihon refused. Verse 30 reveals the theological reality: "the LORD thy God hardened his spirit"—God hardened Sihon's heart to accomplish His purposes. This does not remove Sihon's moral responsibility but shows God's sovereign orchestration of events. Israel defeated Sihon utterly, taking his cities and possessions (verses 32-36). Significantly, verse 37 notes Israel's obedience: they did not encroach on Ammonite territory, respecting God's boundary-setting even in victory.
Deuteronomy 2 teaches believers that God's provision is trustworthy through every season, His judgments are just, and His promises are certain. Like Israel, we must trust God's boundaries and respect the rights of others, even when we are strong. Most importantly, we see in Christ the fulfillment of Israel's covenant; His resurrection is our wilderness's end and our assured inheritance.
