Study Notes — Deuteronomy 11
6 sectionsDeuteronomy 11 is Moses' passionate appeal to the second generation of Israel to love God and obey His commandments in light of the mighty works He has already performed on their behalf. The chapter centers on a profound theological principle: obedience flows from love, and love is strengthened by remembering God's faithfulness. Moses contrasts the conditional blessings that come from faithful obedience with the curses that follow disobedience, calling Israel to a decisive commitment to the Lord as they prepare to enter the Promised Land.
Moses begins with an imperative that echoes throughout Deuteronomy: love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments (v. 1). This is not mere sentiment but covenantal devotion expressed through obedience. Verses 2–7 ground this call in memory. Moses reminds the people that I speak not with your children which have not known (v. 2)—he is addressing those who witnessed God's plagues in Egypt, the drowning of Pharaoh's army in the Red Sea (v. 4), God's care in the wilderness (v. 5), and His judgment on Dathan and Abiram (v. 6). These vivid, personal memories are meant to kindle gratitude and loyalty. The point is clear: you have seen all the great acts of the LORD (v. 7), and that experience should compel your heart toward obedience.
Pastoral Application: We, too, should regularly recall God's faithfulness in our own lives. Remembrance strengthens faith and motivates obedience.
Moses connects obedience to possession of the land (v. 8) and long life within it (v. 9). He then describes the Promised Land itself as fundamentally different from Egypt. Egypt required irrigation—thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs (v. 10)—suggesting human labor and control. Canaan, by contrast, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven (v. 11). This dependency on rain emphasizes that the land's fruitfulness depends on God's provision. The striking promise in verse 12 declares that the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year—a beautiful image of God's constant vigilance and care over the land He is giving them.
Pastoral Application: God's care over His people is constant. We are invited to trust in His provision rather than rely on our own strength alone.
Verses 13–15 present the blessing: if Israel will hearken diligently unto my commandments and love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul (v. 13), then God promises timely rain, agricultural abundance, and satisfied pastures (vv. 14–15). Verses 16–17 warn of the opposite. If your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods (v. 16), God's wrath will bring drought and famine, causing Israel to perish quickly from off the good land (v. 17). This is not arbitrary punishment but the natural consequence of covenant violation—the land's blessing is inseparable from loyalty to the Lord.
Moses prescribes how Israel should maintain faithfulness: lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul (v. 18), teach them diligently to children in everyday contexts (v. 19), and write them visibly on doorposts and gates (v. 20). This multifaceted approach—heart meditation, family instruction, and visible reminders—safeguards against forgetfulness and apostasy. The result: long life in the land (v. 21) and military victory over nations greater and mightier than Israel (vv. 22–25).
Moses concludes with stark clarity: I set before you this day a blessing and a curse (v. 26). Obedience brings blessing; disobedience brings curse (vv. 27–28). The ceremony at Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal (vv. 29–30) would later dramatize this choice, with blessings proclaimed from one mountain and curses from the other. The chapter ends with a call to observe all the statutes and judgments (v. 32).
Though we no longer live under the old covenant, Deuteronomy 11 teaches enduring principles. God rewards faithfulness and obedience; disobedience carries real consequences. More importantly, the chapter shows us that
