Joshua 22

Joshua 22 records a pivotal moment in Israel's history: the dismissal of the Transjordanian tribes (Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh) to their eastern territories after the conquest is complete. What begins as a commendation of faithfulness nearly erupts into civil war when these tribes build an altar, which other Israelites interpret as rebellion against God. The chapter demonstrates both the danger of misunderstanding and the power of humble explanation, ultimately resolving through prayerful dialogue and the recognition that God's covenant people must maintain unity in worship and doctrine.

Joshua addresses the eastern tribes with heartfelt praise for their faithfulness. They have fulfilled their covenant obligation to fight alongside their brothers until the land was secured (see Numbers 32). Now that the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren (v. 4), they are released to possess their inheritance east of the Jordan. But Joshua does not dismiss them with a light heart; he charges them solemnly to keep the law of Moses, to love the Lord, walk in His ways, keep His commandments, and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul (v. 5). This echoes the Shema and emphasizes that privilege brings responsibility. Joshua's farewell is both a blessing and a warning: covenant faithfulness requires continued obedience.

Joshua blesses the eastern tribes and sends them away enriched by the spoil of conquest—silver, gold, brass, iron, and cattle (v. 8). They are instructed to divide this wealth with their brethren, modeling generosity and covenant solidarity. The tribes depart from Shiloh, where Israel's tabernacle stood, heading toward Gilead in accordance with Moses' original grant (v. 9). This separation, while geographically necessary, will soon become a source of theological anxiety among the western tribes.

Disaster nearly strikes when the eastern tribes build a great altar at the Jordan's border (v. 10). The western tribes, hearing this news, interpret it as rebellion—a violation of the law that only one altar should exist, located at the tabernacle. Their concern is not merely political but deeply theological: they fear idolatry and schism (v. 16). They dispatch Phinehas the high priest and ten tribal princes to confront the breach. Phinehas even invokes the judgment of Achan (vv. 20), reminding them that one person's transgression brings corporate judgment. The accusation is grave: ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the LORD (v. 16).

The eastern tribes respond with wisdom and reverence. They swear by God Himself (v. 22) that they did not build the altar for sacrifices or burnt offerings, but as a witness between themselves and their western brethren (v. 26-28). Their fear is pastoral: separated by the Jordan, their children might be told they have no part in Israel's covenant. The altar serves as a tangible reminder of their unity in worship and covenant standing. This is not rebellion; it is a memorial to prevent future misunderstanding. Their explanation is both humble and theologically sound.

Phinehas and the princes are satisfied by this testimony (v. 30). They recognize that the LORD is among us (v. 31) and return to report the peaceful resolution. The whole congregation blesses God, and the memorial altar is named Ed—meaning "witness" (v. 34). Potential civil war becomes a catalyst for deeper communion.
