Study Notes — Joshua 6
5 sectionsJoshua chapter 6 records one of Scripture's most remarkable miracles: the fall of Jericho's walls through faith and obedience rather than military force. The Lord gives Joshua explicit instructions for a seven-day campaign that culminates in the supernatural collapse of the city's defenses. This account demonstrates that victory belongs to the Lord, not to human strength or strategy, and teaches the importance of trusting God's commands even when they seem unconventional. The preservation of Rahab amid the city's destruction also illustrates God's grace toward those who believe and repent.
Joshua opens with Jericho in lockdown—fear of Israel has sealed the gates completely (v. 1). The Lord reassures Joshua: "See, I have given into thine hand Jericho" (v. 2). Notice the past tense; God speaks of victory as already accomplished in His purpose. The Lord then unveils an unusual strategy: for six days, the armed men and priests bearing the ark must circle the city once daily while seven priests blow ram's horn trumpets (vv. 3–4). On the seventh day, they circle seven times, and at the final trumpet blast, all the people shout, and the walls collapse (v. 5). This plan required absolute faith—there was no conventional military logic here. The emphasis on the ark of the covenant shows that God's presence, not Israel's might, would secure the victory.
Joshua commands the priests and people with precision (vv. 6–9). Crucially, the people are forbidden to speak or shout until given the signal—only the trumpet blasts sound (v. 10). This silence, maintained over six days of circling, demonstrated remarkable discipline and trust. The procession order is clear: armed men, priests with trumpets, the ark in the center, and a rear guard following. The passage emphasizes repetition: days one through six follow the identical pattern, with the people returning to camp each evening (vv. 11–14). This routine tested Israel's faith daily. Would they doubt? Would they question? Yet they obeyed without apparent complaint.
On the seventh day, Israel rises early and completes seven circuits instead of one (v. 15). At the seventh circuit, Joshua finally commands: "Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city" (v. 16). When the people shout in obedience, the walls fall "down flat" (v. 20)—a total, instantaneous collapse. The victory is God's alone. This miracle appears nowhere else in ancient Near Eastern military records; it stands as unique testimony to divine power. The people's role was simply to obey, trust, and respond when commanded.
Jericho is devoted to the Lord as an "accursed thing"—dedicated to His judgment (v. 17). All inhabitants and animals are destroyed, but Rahab is spared along with her household (vv. 22–25). Why? Because she believed and protected the Israelite spies. Her salvation amid destruction prefigures the gospel: grace extended to those who believe. Precious metals are consecrated to the Lord's treasury (vv. 19, 24), showing that victory's spoils belong to Him. Joshua's oath never to rebuild Jericho (v. 26) reinforces that this was God's singular act.
Jericho teaches us that our struggles—whether spiritual, personal, or relational—require not superior strength but obedience to God's Word and trust in His promises. Like Israel, we often receive God's directives before seeing results. Faith means obeying when circumstances seem impossible and silence seems pointless. Additionally, Rahab's rescue reminds us that God's grace reaches even the outsider and the broken; belief, not background, determines our standing with Him. Our victory lies not in ourselves but in the Lord who fights for us.
