The Ark of the Covenant as a Type of Christ

This article explains the biblical symbol and type of the Ark of the Covenant, the sacred chest that resided in the Holy of Holies. The ark was the earthly throne of God, the place of atonement, and the container of the law. Every aspect of the ark—its wood, its gold, its contents, its cover, and its place—points to the person and work of Jesus Christ. Christ is the fulfillment of all that the ark represented.

1. The Ark Was Made of Acacia Wood and Overlaid with Gold

The Lord commanded Moses to make an ark of acacia wood, two and a half cubits long, one and a half cubits wide, and one and a half cubits high. He was to overlay it with pure gold, inside and outside. The acacia wood is a hard, durable, and incorruptible wood, symbolizing the sinless humanity of Jesus Christ. The gold speaks of His divine nature, His royalty, and His glory. In Christ, perfect humanity and perfect deity are united in one Person. He is both the wood (true man) and the gold (true God).

2. The Ark Was Overlaid with Gold Inside and Out

The ark was covered with gold both inside and outside. This signifies that Christ's deity is not merely external but intrinsic to His being. He is God from the inside out. Unlike a human prophet who receives an external anointing, Christ is Himself God. The gold inside speaks of His internal divine nature; the gold outside speaks of His divine glory revealed in His words and works. All that He is, both inwardly and outwardly, is divine.

3. The Ark Contained the Two Tablets of the Law

Inside the ark, Moses placed the two tablets of stone on which God had written the Ten Commandments. The law of God was kept inside the ark, covered by the mercy seat. This pictures Christ, who has the law of God in His heart. He said, "I delight to do Your will, O My God; Your law is within My heart." Christ perfectly kept the law, fulfilling all righteousness. The law that condemns sinners was perfectly obeyed by the Savior. In Christ, the righteousness of the law is fulfilled for His people.

4. The Ark Also Contained the Golden Pot of Manna

The Lord commanded Moses to take a golden pot and put an omer of manna in it, to be kept for generations as a testimony of God's provision. This pot was placed before the Testimony inside the ark. The manna is a type of Christ, the bread from heaven. Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die." The golden pot of manna speaks of Christ as the hidden bread, the true sustenance of the soul.

5. The Ark Contained Aaron's Rod That Budded

When Korah's rebellion challenged the priesthood, the Lord caused Aaron's rod to bud, blossom, and produce almonds overnight. That rod was placed before the Testimony and kept inside the ark as a sign of God's chosen priesthood. Aaron's rod that budded is a type of Christ, the resurrected and living High Priest. Christ died, but He rose again. He is the living branch, the chosen Priest who lives forever to make intercession for His people. His resurrection is the proof of His eternal priesthood.

6. The Mercy Seat Was the Solid Gold Cover of the Ark

Moses was to make a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and one and a half cubits wide. He was to make two cherubim of gold at the two ends of the mercy seat. The cherubim faced each other, their wings covering the mercy seat. The mercy seat was the place where God promised to meet with Moses and speak to him. The Hebrew word is kapporet, meaning "covering" or "propitiation." Paul calls Christ the propitiation (mercy seat) for sins. Christ is the place where God's justice and mercy meet. On the mercy seat, blood was sprinkled; in Christ, His blood satisfies divine justice and covers sin.

7. The Blood Was Sprinkled on the Mercy Seat on the Day of Atonement

Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies with the blood of the sacrifice. He sprinkled the blood on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat seven times. This blood covered the law inside the ark, symbolizing that God's judgment was satisfied. Christ is both the High Priest and the Sacrifice. He entered the heavenly Holy of Holies with His own blood, obtaining eternal redemption. The sprinkled blood of Christ speaks better than the blood of Abel. Where the law condemned, the blood of the mercy seat pardoned.

8. The Ark Was Carried on Poles, Never Touched by Human Hands

The Lord commanded that poles of acacia wood overlaid with gold be inserted into rings on the sides of the ark. The poles were never to be removed. No man was to touch the ark itself. When Uzzah touched the ark to steady it, the Lord struck him dead. This teaches the holiness of God and the separation between the divine and the profane. Christ, like the ark, is holy. No unclean hand can approach Him apart from His grace. Yet through faith, believers come boldly to the throne of grace because Christ's holiness is now their covering.

9. The Ark Led Israel Through the Jordan and Around Jericho

The Ark of the Covenant led Israel across the Jordan River. As soon as the priests carrying the ark stepped into the water, the river parted. The ark went before Israel around the walls of Jericho, and on the seventh day, the walls fell. The ark was the symbol of God's presence and power. Christ leads His people through the waters of death and judgment. He goes before them, and the walls of every obstacle fall. Where Christ leads, His people follow safely.

10. The Ark Was Captured but Returned, Foreshadowing Christ's Victory

The Philistines captured the ark of God and placed it in the house of Dagon. The next morning, Dagon had fallen on its face before the ark. The Lord plagued the Philistines with tumors and sent the ark back to Israel on a cart pulled by milk cows. The ark could not be held by God's enemies. Christ was seized by His enemies, crucified, and buried. But on the third day, He rose from the dead. Death could not hold Him. He is the victorious Ark who cannot be defeated.

Conclusion
The Ark of the Covenant is a rich and glorious type of Jesus Christ. In His humanity (acacia wood), His deity (gold), His perfect obedience (the law within), His provision (the manna), His resurrection life (Aaron's rod), and His atoning blood (the mercy seat), Christ is the fulfillment of all that the ark represented. He is the very presence of God among His people. He is the throne of grace where sinners may meet a holy God and live.
