Study Notes — Joshua 10
6 sectionsJoshua 10 presents one of the most dramatic military campaigns in Scripture, showcasing God's power to deliver His people against overwhelming odds. When five Canaanite kings unite to attack Gibeon (Israel's new ally), Joshua responds with bold faith, and the LORD responds with extraordinary intervention—including the famous miracle of the sun standing still. This chapter demonstrates that victory in spiritual warfare belongs to the Lord, not to human strength or strategy, and that obedience to God's command always results in triumph.
Adonizedec, king of Jerusalem, learns that Joshua has destroyed both Jericho and Ai, and more troublingly, that Gibeon has made a peace treaty with Israel (see Joshua 9). Fearing Gibeon's strength and Israel's growing power, he rallies four other kings—of Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon—to form a military alliance. These five Amorite kings unite their armies and march against Gibeon, seeking to punish this city for its betrayal and to stop Israel's expansion. The passage shows how fear motivates human action; yet what the kings intend for evil, God will use for His purposes.
Gibeon's leaders send an urgent plea to Joshua at Gilgal: "Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us" (v. 6). Joshua does not hesitate. He ascends from Gilgal immediately with all his fighting men, and crucially, the LORD assures him, "Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee" (v. 8). Joshua's rapid night march demonstrates leadership and courage, but his confidence rests ultimately in God's promise. This pattern—God's word followed by human obedience—is the foundation of Joshua's success throughout the conquest.
The LORD "discomfits" (throws into confusion) the enemy before Israel, and the slaughter is great. As the kings flee toward Bethhoron, the LORD hurls massive hailstones that kill more Canaanites than the Israelite sword (v. 11). Then comes the most extraordinary moment: Joshua commands the sun to stand still upon Gibeon and the moon in the valley of Ajalon. The text records that "the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day" (v. 13). Whether this represents a literal lengthening of daylight or a cosmic sign, the miracle is unprecedented: "there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel" (v. 14). This miracle confirms that God Himself is Israel's true commander-in-chief.
The five kings flee and hide in a cave at Makkedah. Joshua has his men seal the cave and continue pursuing the enemy until the conquest is complete (vv. 18–20). After the victory, the kings are brought before Joshua and all Israel. Joshua commands his captains to put their feet upon the necks of these kings—a gesture of total dominion and the fulfillment of God's promise (v. 24). Joshua then executes the kings and hangs their bodies on trees until evening, before burying them in the cave where they hid (vv. 26–27). This harsh judgment reflects the covenant reality: those who oppose the LORD's people face His judgment.
Joshua systematically conquers the southern cities—Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir—fulfilling God's command to destroy completely all that breathes in the land (v. 40). The repeated phrase "he left none remaining" emphasizes total obedience. Joshua accomplishes this entire campaign "because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel" (v. 42).
Joshua 10 teaches that our battles belong to the Lord. When we face overwhelming opposition as Christians, we must trust God's promises, obey His commands, and rest in His power. The sun standing still reminds us that God transcends natural law; nothing is impossible for Him. Our part is faithful obedience; His part is certain victory.
