Study Notes — Joshua 24
6 sectionsJoshua chapter 24 records the final and most solemn act of Joshua's leadership: a covenant renewal ceremony at Shechem where he calls all Israel to make a decisive choice to serve the LORD alone. This chapter is a masterpiece of pastoral theology, combining a sweeping historical review of God's faithfulness, a clear call to commitment, and a stern warning about the cost of faithfulness. Joshua himself makes a personal declaration that echoes through the centuries: "As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD" (v. 15). The chapter closes with Joshua's death and burial, marking the end of an era and the beginning of Israel's spiritual struggle to maintain the covenant their leader had renewed.
Joshua gathers Israel's leadership—elders, heads, judges, and officers—at Shechem, a place rich in covenant significance. He then speaks on behalf of God, recounting the nation's spiritual history from Abraham onwards. He reminds them that their ancestor Terah and Abraham's family initially served other gods before the LORD called Abraham out (v. 2). This opening is humbling: Israel's salvation history did not begin with righteousness but with God's sovereign grace calling an idolater to faith. The recital continues through Abraham's multiplication, Isaac's birth, Jacob and Esau's separation, and the Egyptian bondage (vv. 3–4). God is establishing that every blessing they possess traces back to His initiative, not their merit.
Joshua reminds Israel of the exodus, the Red Sea deliverance, the wilderness journey, and the conquest of Canaan (vv. 6–11). Notably, he credits God—not Israel—with the victories. In verse 12, he emphasizes that the hornet (likely a symbol of divine intervention, possibly representing psychological terror or actual plague) drove out the enemy kings, "not with thy sword, nor with thy bow." This is crucial: Israel's victories were God's victories. Verses 12–13 stress that every possession—land, cities, vineyards, and olive groves—was given freely, not earned. Israel entered a land prepared and productive, asking nothing but faith and obedience. This historical recital is designed to stir gratitude and loyalty.
Joshua now issues a direct command: fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and truth, and put away the gods their fathers once served (v. 14). Verse 15 presents the famous crossroads: Joshua doesn't demand loyalty but places before Israel a genuine choice. He gives them the option to serve other gods—the gods of their ancestors or the gods of Canaan—but he declares his own unshakeable resolution: "As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." This personal example becomes the leader's most powerful sermon. The people's response (vv. 16–18) is immediate and affirmative, recalling God's deliverance and declaring their commitment.
Joshua then delivers a sobering word: serving the LORD is no light matter. He is a holy and jealous God who will not forgive their transgressions if they forsake Him (v. 19). This is not harsh judgment but honest love—the people must know the seriousness of their choice. After the people reaffirm their commitment (vv. 21, 24), Joshua formalizes the covenant with statute and ordinance, records it in the book of the law, and erects a great stone beneath an oak near God's sanctuary as a perpetual witness (vv. 25–27). The stone will testify against them if they deny God—a tangible memorial to their sworn oath.
The chapter closes with Joshua's death at age 110 and brief notes on the faithful generation that outlived him. Israel served the LORD during these years, honoring both Joshua and the covenant he had championed. The burials of Joseph and Eleazar emphasize continuity and God's enduring promises.
Joshua's final message is timeless: genuine faith requires both remembrance of God's faithfulness and a decisive choice to serve Him alone. As believers, we too must regularly recall His work in our lives, consciously renew our commitment, and live out our choice daily—not perfectly, but genuinely and in community. Our "stone witness" is Christ Himself, calling us to faithful discipleship.
