Study Notes — Leviticus 7
8 sectionsLeviticus 7 completes the detailed instructions for the five major offerings introduced in chapters 1-6. This chapter provides the legal framework for how the trespass offering and peace offerings are to be conducted, who benefits from them, and crucial dietary laws that govern all Israel. The chapter emphasizes the holiness required in worship—both in how offerings are presented and in the ritual purity of those who partake of them. Throughout, we see God's concern for right relationship with Him, careful stewardship of His gifts, and the dignity of the priestly office.
The trespass offering (also called the guilt offering) is described as "most holy" (v. 1), requiring the same location and blood ritual as the burnt offering. The fat portions—the rump, inward fat, kidneys, and the caul above the liver—are burned on the altar (vv. 3-5), representing the complete surrender of what is most valuable. Unlike the burnt offering, however, the trespass offering provides food for the priests: "every male among the priests shall eat thereof" in the holy place (v. 6). This reflects a biblical principle that those who serve God's purposes are entitled to sustenance from the offerings. Verse 7 establishes that the trespass and sin offerings follow identical procedures and share rules, with the officiating priest receiving his portion as compensation for his atonement work.
God's provision for the priesthood is clarified here. The priest who offers a burnt offering receives the skin (v. 8)—a valuable item. Grain offerings also become the priest's food, whether baked, fried, or pan-cooked (v. 9). All sons of Aaron share equally in dry grain offerings (v. 10). This system ensured the priestly tribe of Levi had no inheritance of land (as Numbers 18 explains), but rather lived by the offerings themselves—a beautiful picture of faith and God's direct provision.
The peace offering, presented as thanksgiving, vow, or voluntary worship, comes with specific bread: unleavened cakes with oil, plus leavened bread (vv. 12-13). A portion is waved before the Lord and given to the priest (v. 14). Critical rules govern when the meat may be eaten: thanksgiving offerings must be consumed the same day (v. 15), while votive and voluntary offerings may be eaten through the second day (v. 16). Any flesh remaining on the third day must be burned (v. 17). If eaten after the deadline, it becomes an abomination and the offerer bears guilt (v. 18). These strict timelines emphasized that worship is not casual; it requires prompt, reverent participation.
Before eating consecrated meat, one must be ceremonially clean. Flesh touched by anything unclean is burned (v. 19). Anyone who eats peace offering meat while bearing uncleanness "shall be cut off from his people" (vv. 20-21)—a serious consequence reflecting that worship demands personal holiness.
God prohibits eating fat from oxen, sheep, or goats (v. 23)—fat belonged to the Lord as the choicest offering. Fat from carrion or torn animals could be used otherwise, but not eaten (v. 24). Breaking this law brings excision from the community (v. 25). Similarly, no blood may be consumed anywhere (vv. 26-27), whether of fowl or beast, with the same penalty for violation. Blood represents life itself (see Leviticus 17:11) and belongs exclusively to God's altar.
In peace offerings, the offerer brings the fat and breast to the priest for waving (vv. 29-31). The fat is burned; the breast becomes Aaron's and his sons' portion. The right shoulder goes to the specific priest conducting the ritual (vv. 32-33). These portions, given "by a statute for ever," supported the priesthood and acknowledged their sacred role (vv. 34-36).
The chapter closes by recapitulating all five offerings and attributing these laws directly to God's command at Mount Sinai (vv. 37-38), grounding them in divine authority.
While Christians no longer offer animal sacrifices—Christ fulfilled them all—Leviticus 7 teaches us that worship demands reverence, purity, and proper timing. It shows God's care for those in ministry and His insistence that we approach Him with clean hearts. We honor God when we give our best, maintain spiritual cleanliness, and remember that worship is not a casual activity but a sacred privilege requiring our full, prompt devotion.
