Study Notes — Leviticus 27
6 sectionsLeviticus 27 concludes the book by addressing the practise of making vows to God and the redemption of what has been vowed. This final chapter establishes the monetary valuations for persons, animals, land, and other possessions dedicated to the Lord, and clarifies the conditions under which vows may be redeemed. Rather than being arbitrary, these laws reflect God's order and the seriousness with which He regards covenantal commitments. The chapter demonstrates that while the Lord accepts our devotion, He provides a gracious framework for those unable to fulfil their vows in full.
God instructs Moses to establish a system of monetary equivalents for persons vowed to the Lord. A healthy adult male (ages 20-60) is valued at fifty shekels of silver; a female at thirty shekels. Children and the elderly have correspondingly lower valuations, reflecting economic productivity in an agricultural society. Verse 8 is particularly pastoral: if a person making a vow is too poor to pay the full estimation, the priest may reduce the amount according to what the vower can afford. This provision shows God's compassion toward the economically disadvantaged and affirms that sincere devotion, not wealth, determines acceptance.
When someone vows a clean animal (suitable for sacrifice), it becomes irrevocably holy and cannot be exchanged (verses 9-10). The owner may not substitute a poor animal for a good one or vice versa. However, unclean animals (unsuitable for sacrifice) may be redeemed by paying their assessed value plus one-fifth (verses 11-13). This distinction emphasizes that what is offered to God must be genuine and cannot be treated as negotiable property.
Houses and portions of inherited fields may be dedicated to the Lord. The priest assesses their value, and redemption is possible by paying the assessed value plus one-fifth (verses 14-15, 19). However, vowed fields that are not redeemed by the jubilee year become the permanent possession of the priests (verses 20-21). Land purchased from others (not ancestral inheritance) reverts to its original owner at the jubilee, with the vow's monetary value given to the sanctuary (verses 22-24). These laws protected both family inheritance rights and the Lord's sanctuary.
All valuations use the shekel of the sanctuary as the standard (twenty gerahs per shekel). Firstborn clean animals already belong to God by law and cannot be vowed (verse 26). Unclean firstborn animals may be redeemed at their assessed value plus one-fifth, or sold at that value if unredeemed (verse 27).
Verse 28 introduces a critical distinction: things explicitly devoted (Hebrew cherem) to the Lord cannot be redeemed or sold—they are permanently forfeited and belong entirely to God. This applied to devoted persons (verse 29), emphasizing the finality and seriousness of such dedications. The chapter concludes by reaffirming that all tithes of land and livestock are the Lord's (verses 30-33), and redemption of tithes requires adding one-fifth to their value. The tithe of livestock cannot be selected; every tenth animal that passes under the rod belongs to God.
Leviticus 27 reminds us that commitment to God should be thoughtful and sincere, not reckless. While the specific vow system belonged to Israel's covenant, the principle endures: when we dedicate ourselves or our resources to the Lord, we do so with gravity and intentionality. The merciful provision for those of limited means shows that God values our hearts, not our wealth. As believers, our ultimate vow is given at conversion—to follow Christ with all we are. This chapter invites us to examine whether our offerings and devotion genuinely reflect our love for God.
