Leviticus 16

Leviticus 16 describes the most sacred ceremony in Israel's religious calendar: the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). This solemn annual observance on the tenth day of the seventh month was God's ordained means for cleansing the nation and the sanctuary from all their sins. The chapter presents a detailed ritual performed by the high priest alone, involving sin offerings, a scapegoat, and the only authorized entry into the Holy of Holies. This passage is foundational to understanding Old Testament theology and finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ's atoning work.

The chapter opens with a reference to Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu, who died when they approached God's presence irreverently (Leviticus 10). This context underscores the deadly seriousness of approaching a holy God. The Lord instructs Moses that Aaron must not enter the Holy of Holies (the innermost sanctuary behind the veil) at will, but only on the Day of Atonement with proper sacrificial offerings and preparation. Aaron must wear holy linen garments—not his regular priestly vestments—symbolizing purity and separation for this unique duty. He gathers the necessary animals: a young bullock for his own sin offering, a ram for burnt offering, and two goats from the people (verses 3–5). Everything speaks to preparation and humility before God.

Aaron first offers the bullock for his own sins and his household, acknowledging that even the high priest needs atonement. He then presents two goats and casts lots—leaving the choice to God (verse 8). One goat becomes a sin offering to the Lord; the other becomes the scapegoat (the "goat of removal"). This dual provision is striking: one animal dies to satisfy God's justice; the other carries away the people's sins symbolically into the wilderness. The scapegoat imagery—transferring guilt and removing it from the camp—became an enduring picture of how sin is dealt with: both atoned and removed.

Aaron enters the Holy of Holies with incense (whose smoke protects him in God's presence) and the blood of the bullock, sprinkling it seven times on and before the mercy seat—the place where God's presence dwells. He repeats this with the goat's blood (verses 14–15). The blood represents atonement—the life given for sin (Leviticus 17:11). He then cleanses the altar outside the veil and the entire tabernacle with mixed blood from both sacrifices (verses 18–19). The repeated number seven signifies completeness and divine approval.

In a dramatic moment, Aaron lays both hands on the live goat and confesses Israel's sins over it, transferring them symbolically to the animal. A designated man then leads it into the wilderness to die—a final, visible removal of guilt (verses 21–22). The remaining animals are burned outside the camp, and those involved wash themselves ceremonially, preventing any contamination from entering the community.

This Day of Atonement is established as an eternal ordinance, occurring annually on the tenth day of Tishrei (the seventh month). It is a Sabbath of rest, marked by fasting ("afflict your souls") and cessation of labor for all Israel, regardless of status. Verse 34 emphasizes that this provides comprehensive annual atonement for all Israel's sins.
