Study Notes — Leviticus 15
6 sectionsLeviticus 15 addresses the laws of ritual purity concerning bodily discharges in both men and women. These regulations were not primarily about hygiene or moral condemnation, but about maintaining the holiness of God's tabernacle and the covenant community. The chapter teaches that uncleanness—whether from natural bodily functions or disease—required specific cleansing procedures and ultimately pointed Israel toward the need for spiritual restoration through priestly mediation and sacrifice.
Moses and Aaron receive instruction concerning men with abnormal bodily discharge. A man experiencing a running issue from his flesh becomes ritually unclean (vv. 2-3). This uncleanness extends to anything he lies or sits upon (vv. 4-6), and to anyone who touches him or his possessions (vv. 7-11). The key principle is contact—direct or indirect—communicates uncleanness to others until evening, when washing in water restores ceremonial cleanliness. This was not a moral judgment on the man, but a practical boundary that separated the unclean from the holy place and holy objects. God's concern for the tabernacle's sanctity demanded these separations.
When the discharge ceases, the man enters a seven-day cleansing period, washing himself in running water (v. 13). On the eighth day, he brings two turtledoves or pigeons to the priest at the tabernacle entrance (v. 14). The priest offers one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering, making atonement before the LORD (v. 15). This progression teaches that restoration to the community required both personal cleansing and priestly atonement. The sacrifice acknowledged that uncleanness had a spiritual dimension requiring mediation before God.
Natural marital relations involve ritual uncleanness. When a man has an emission of seed, he washes entirely in water and remains unclean until evening (v. 16). Any garments or skin touched by the discharge require washing (v. 17). A woman involved in such relations also washes and remains unclean until evening (v. 18). This applied to lawful, marital relations—not as condemnation but as a reminder that sexuality, though ordained by God, involves a temporary separation from sacred functions. Such regulations encouraged reverence for both the marriage covenant and the worship of God.
A woman during her menstrual period is set apart for seven days; anyone touching her becomes unclean until evening (vv. 19-23). Everything she lies or sits upon becomes unclean, and those who touch such items must wash and bathe (vv. 20-23). If bleeding extends beyond normal menstruation, the abnormal days follow the same rules as the regular period (vv. 25-26). After the discharge ceases, she counts seven clean days and brings two birds for atonement on the eighth day (vv. 28-30). Like the man, she requires priestly atonement to be fully restored to community and worship. The priest makes atonement "for the issue of her uncleanness" (v. 30).
The chapter concludes with the overarching purpose: "Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness; that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle" (v. 31). These laws were protective—maintaining holiness around God's dwelling place. The final verses summarize all cases covered (vv. 32-33), establishing a complete framework for purity.
While Christians are no longer bound by Old Testament ceremonial laws (Acts 10; Colossians 2:16-17), Leviticus 15 reveals God's holiness and His desire for His people to approach Him with reverence. The elaborate system of cleansing and atonement ultimately pointed to Christ, whose sacrifice made the final, perfect atonement for all uncleanness. Today, we access God's presence directly through Christ's blood, yet these ancient laws remind us that drawing near to God requires respect, confession of sin, and reliance on Christ's mediation. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)—a truth rooted in these ancient purity codes.
