Study Notes — Judges 9
5 sectionsJudges 9 presents one of Scripture's darkest accounts of human ambition and covenant-breaking. After the death of Gideon (Jerubbaal), his son Abimelech pursues kingship through murder, manipulation, and violence—ultimately bringing judgment upon himself and the city of Shechem. This chapter serves as a tragic illustration of what happens when God's people reject His leadership and embrace worldly power structures, and it demonstrates that divine justice, though patient, is ultimately inescapable.
Abimelech, the son of Gideon's concubine, manipulates the men of Shechem by appealing to their tribal loyalty. Rather than accept that God had not appointed him as judge, he pursues kingship through calculation. His question in verse 2—would they prefer seventy rulers or one?—reveals his cunning appeal to self-interest. The men of Shechem, moved by kinship rather than discernment, fund his scheme with seventy pieces of silver taken from the house of Baalberith (the Canaanite deity). With mercenary soldiers, Abimelech then commits the unspeakable: he murders his own seventy brothers on a single stone. Only Jotham, the youngest, escapes by hiding. This was not a struggle for succession; it was calculated fratricide motivated by ambition.
When Abimelech is crowned king, Jotham delivers a withering parable from Mount Gerizim. The olive, fig, and vine trees each refuse kingship because they serve valuable purposes—they honor God and man through their fruit and usefulness. Only the bramble—worthless, unfruitful, and dangerous—accepts the crown. The bramble's promise is hollow: its only "strength" is to consume those who trust in it (verse 15). This parable brilliantly captures a spiritual truth: those most suited to leadership are often unwilling, while the unqualified and destructive eagerly seize power. Jotham then explicitly pronounces a curse (verses 16–20): if the men of Shechem acted truly in honoring Jerubbaal's legacy, let them rejoice together; but if not, let fire consume both Abimelech and Shechem. Jotham then flees, recognizing his danger.
After three years, God actively intervenes by sending "an evil spirit" between Abimelech and Shechem (verse 23). This phrase reflects God's sovereignty in allowing the natural consequences of sin to work themselves out. The men of Shechem, who had benefited from the massacre, begin to resent their king. They set ambushes and rob travelers, effectively rebelling. A rival leader, Gaal the son of Ebed, arrives and incites further rebellion. Abimelech, warned by his officer Zebul, attacks at dawn. Gaal is defeated and expelled, and Abimelech destroys the city itself, sowing it with salt—a symbol of complete desolation.
Abimelech's final campaign against Thebez proves to be his undoing. As he storms a tower, a woman casts a millstone upon his head, crushing his skull (verse 53). Rather than die at a woman's hand and damage his reputation, Abimelech commands his armor-bearer to kill him. Verse 56–57 provides the theological conclusion: God rendered back Abimelech's wickedness upon himself, and all the evil of Shechem returned upon their heads. Jotham's curse, pronounced in faith, came to pass.
This chapter warns believers against pursuing power, position, and recognition apart from God's calling and character. Abimelech and Shechem teach us that worldly success built on bloodshed, manipulation, and covenant-breaking carries within it the seeds of its own destruction. True leadership, like the olive and fig trees, flows from humble service and fruitfulness. We are called to trust God's timing and providence rather than grasp for control.
