Study Notes — Judges 6
7 sectionsJudges 6 marks a critical turning point in Israel's cycle of disobedience and deliverance. After doing evil in God's sight, Israel falls under Midianite oppression for seven years, reduced to hiding in caves and mountains. When their cry reaches heaven, God raises up Gideon as a deliverer—but not before calling him to personal reformation, destroying the idolatry in his own household. This chapter beautifully illustrates God's patience with His people, His willingness to meet our weakness with His strength, and the necessity of personal obedience before He uses us for His purposes.
Israel's downward spiral begins again with evil in God's sight (v. 1). The Lord's response is not arbitrary punishment but measured discipline: He delivers them into Midianite hands for seven years. The devastation is complete—the enemy comes like locusts (v. 5), consuming crops and livestock until nothing remains. Verse 2 shows the desperate reality: Israel is so oppressed they dig caves and makeshift shelters in the mountains. This is not merely political defeat; it is the natural consequence of covenant-breaking. Yet verse 6 contains a word of hope: Israel cried unto the LORD. Desperation can become a doorway to repentance when it drives us back to God.
Before raising up a military deliverer, God sends a prophet to remind Israel of their identity and obligations (vv. 7–10). The message is not new; it echoes what God has already said. Notice the progression: "I brought you up from Egypt… delivered you… gave you their land… I am the LORD your God—fear not the gods of the Amorites" (vv. 8–10). This is a covenant review. God reminds Israel that their security lies not in military strength but in exclusive allegiance to Him. Their failure was not merely political; it was spiritual—they abandoned their covenant Lord for the gods of the land around them.
Enter Gideon, threshing wheat by a winepress to hide it from raiders (v. 11). He is not a warrior; he is a frightened young man trying to survive. Yet the angel greets him as "thou mighty man of valour" (v. 12)—speaking not of present circumstances but of God's purposes. Gideon's honest response (v. 13) voices the faith-struggle many believers face: "If the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us?" It is a valid question born of real pain. The Lord's answer is sovereign and simple: "Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel" (v. 14). God does not explain the suffering; He redirects Gideon's focus from his circumstances to his calling. When Gideon protests his weakness (v. 15), the promise comes again: "I will be with thee" (v. 16). The mission's success depends not on Gideon's strength but on God's presence.
Gideon requests a sign (v. 17), and God graciously grants it. The miraculous consumption of the offering by fire (v. 21) confirms the divine call. This leads Gideon to build an altar called "Jehovah-shalom"—the LORD is peace (v. 24). The name captures a profound truth: true peace comes through right relationship with God, not through the absence of conflict.
Before leading Israel to victory, Gideon must lead his own household away from idolatry. He demolishes his father's altar to Baal (vv. 25–27), and his father Joash makes a remarkable stand: "If [Baal] be a god, let him plead for himself" (v. 31). The name Jerubbaal—"Let Baal plead"—becomes Gideon's new identity (v. 32).
The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Gideon (v. 34), and he summons Israel to war. His request for the fleece (vv. 36–40) shows his continued need for assurance—not wrong, but a mark of his journey toward stronger faith.
Gideon teaches us that God often calls the weak, the fearful, and the doubting. He does not wait for us to become strong before He uses us; rather, His strength is perfected in our weakness. Like Gideon, we may struggle to believe God's promises when circumstances seem to contradict them. Yet our calling is to obey, beginning with personal reformation—removing idols from our own hearts—and then stepping forward in faith, knowing God's presence makes all the difference.
