Study Notes — 2 Samuel 3
7 sectionsSecond Samuel 3 marks a turning point in David's rise to power and his consolidation of the kingdom. While a prolonged civil war rages between David's house and Saul's remnant, David grows stronger while Saul's dynasty weakens. The chapter records David's growing family, Abner's pivotal defection from Saul's camp to David's side, and the tragic assassination of Abner by Joab—an act that deeply grieves David and demonstrates his commitment to justice and his separation from the violent ambitions of his military commanders. Through it all, God's covenant promise to David is being fulfilled, though not without earthly conflict and sorrow.
The chapter opens with a clear statement of the direction history is taking: David's house is gaining strength while Saul's is declining (v. 1). This is not by accident but by God's sovereign purpose. Meanwhile, David's wives bear him six sons in Hebron—Amnon, Chileab, Absalom, Adonijah, Shephatiah, and Ithream (vv. 2–5). The listing of these sons, born to different mothers, reflects both David's royal status and the political alliances he is making through strategic marriages. Notably, Absalom (whose mother was the daughter of the king of Geshur) and Adonijah will later become sources of internal conflict, reminding us that even God's chosen leaders experience family trouble and must navigate the complexities of human relationships.
Abner, Saul's commander, has become the real power behind the weak puppet-king Ishbosheth. When accused of sleeping with Saul's concubine Rizpah, Abner reacts with fury (vv. 6–8). His angry response reveals his true concern: he has been the one keeping Saul's house alive, preventing David's rise. In verses 9–10, Abner makes a fateful oath, swearing by God that he will transfer the kingdom to David exactly as the LORD hath sworn to David. This is crucial—Abner is acknowledging God's covenant promise. Ishbosheth, intimidated and powerless, cannot even respond to Abner's outburst (v. 11). The lesson is clear: without God's blessing, human power crumbles.
Abner now contacts David directly, offering to bring all Israel under David's rule (v. 12). David agrees, but imposes one condition: the return of Michal, Saul's daughter and David's first wife (v. 13). This was both a personal and political matter—Michal was David's legitimate connection to Saul's house. The painful scene of Michal's husband Phaltiel weeping as she is torn from him (v. 16) shows the human cost of political maneuvering, even when God's will is being accomplished.
Abner now moves throughout Israel and Benjamin, reminding the elders that they had previously desired David as king and that God Himself had promised David would save Israel from enemies (vv. 17–18). This masterful political work culminates in Abner coming to David in Hebron with assurances that he will unite all Israel under David's rule (vv. 19–21). David, trusting Abner's intentions, sends him away in peace.
Upon learning that Abner has visited the king, Joab becomes furious. His suspicions about Abner's motives (v. 25) may have been partly justified, but his response—summoning Abner back and murdering him in cold blood to avenge his brother Asahel (v. 27)—is pure vengeance. Joab acts without David's knowledge, overstepping his commander's authority.
David immediately disassociates himself from Joab's deed, calling curses upon Joab's house (vv. 28–29). He publicly mourns Abner with genuine tears (vv. 31–34), lamenting that Abner died unjustly, bound neither in war nor captivity. David's grief and his public refusal to participate in eating until sundown (v. 35) demonstrate his integrity. The people recognize that it was not of the king to slay Abner (v. 37). David acknowledges his own weakness against his fierce military commanders, the sons of Zeruiah, entrusting judgment to the LORD (vv. 38–39).
This chapter teaches us that God's purposes will be fulfilled, but earthly power struggles and human sinfulness complicate the path. David's example shows us the importance of maintaining moral integrity even when surrounded by those who would act violently on our behalf. When leaders we trust abuse their power, we must clearly separate ourselves from their actions and trust God's justice.
