31 David brought out the people who were there and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes, and he made them work at the brick kilns. He did the same to all the Ammonite cities. Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.

Study Notes — 2 Samuel 12
6 sectionsSecond Samuel 12 presents one of Scripture's most powerful accounts of sin, confrontation, and repentance. After David's grave moral failure with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah (recorded in chapter 11), the LORD sends the prophet Nathan to confront the king. Through a penetrating parable, Nathan brings David to genuine repentance, and while David receives forgiveness, he also experiences the severe consequences of his sin. This chapter demonstrates both God's holiness and His mercy, showing that even believers who fall into serious sin can return to Him through confession and faith.
The LORD sends Nathan the prophet to David with a parable about two men—one rich with abundant flocks and herds, the other poor with only one small lamb he loved dearly. When a traveler visits the rich man, instead of using his own wealth, the rich man takes the poor man's only lamb and prepares it for his guest. David, hearing this injustice, becomes righteously angry and pronounces that the man deserves death and must restore the lamb fourfold (verses 1–6). David's immediate moral clarity reveals that his conscience has not yet fully deadened, though his recent actions show terrible spiritual blindness regarding his own conduct.
With the devastating words "Thou art the man," Nathan pivots from parable to prosecution. He reminds David of all the LORD's goodness—David's anointing, deliverance from Saul, the gift of his master's house and wives, and the promise of even greater blessings (verses 7–8). Yet David has despised the commandment of the LORD by murdering Uriah and taking his wife (verse 9). The consequences are severe and far-reaching: the sword will never depart from David's house, and God will raise up evil against him from within his own family (verses 10–11). What David did in secret will be exposed publicly (verse 12). This section reveals that sin against God's commandment brings inevitable judgment, regardless of one's position or prior faithfulness.
David's response is immediate and genuine: "I have sinned against the LORD" (verse 13). Nathan assures him that the LORD has put away his sin and David will not die—a precious word of grace. However, verse 14 contains a sobering qualification: because David's sin has caused the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child born to him and Bathsheba will surely die. This illustrates a profound biblical truth: while God's justification (the removal of guilt and condemnation) comes through repentance and faith, the consequences of sin often continue in this life. God forgives the sinner but permits the natural and appointed fruits of transgression to unfold.
The LORD strikes the child with illness (verse 15), and David spends seven days fasting and pleading with God (verses 16–17). When the child dies on the seventh day, David's servants fear telling him (verse 18). Yet David's response astounds them: he rises, cleanses himself, worships the LORD, and eats bread (verses 19–20). When asked why he no longer grieves, David explains that while the child lived, he hoped God might grant mercy; but now that the child is dead, mourning cannot reverse it. "I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me" (verse 23) suggests David's faith in the afterlife and reunion with his son.
David and Bathsheba are comforted together, and she bears Solomon, whom the LORD loves (verse 24). Nathan announces God's blessing on the child, calling him Jedidiah, meaning "beloved of the LORD" (verse 25). The chapter closes with David's completion of the military campaign against Ammon (verses 26–31), showing the resumption of his duties and God's ongoing use of his leadership despite his failure.
David's story teaches us that genuine repentance—honest acknowledgment of sin before God—opens the door to forgiveness through Christ. Yet it also reminds us that sin has real consequences in this world. As believers, we are called to live in humble awareness of our capacity for serious failure, to respond quickly to conviction, and to trust God's mercy while accepting His discipline. Our confession matters; our repentance is heard; but holiness is never negotiable with God.
