Study Notes — 2 Samuel 2
5 sectionsSecond Samuel chapter 2 marks a pivotal transition in Israel's history. After King Saul's death, David inquires of the Lord and moves to Hebron, where he is anointed king over Judah. However, Abner, Saul's military commander, crowns Saul's son Ishbosheth over the remaining tribes, setting the stage for civil conflict. This chapter illustrates both God's faithfulness in establishing David's kingdom and the human cost of divided loyalties—a powerful reminder that God's purposes prevail, even when earthly resistance seems strong.
David begins wisely by inquiring of the Lord through what was likely the priestly ephod or Urim and Thummim. This demonstrates David's dependence on God rather than mere political calculation. The Lord directs him to Hebron, a significant city in Judah with deep patriarchal associations (it was Abraham's burial place). David brings his two wives and his loyal followers with their families, establishing a genuine community rather than merely a military camp. When the men of Judah anoint David king (verse 4), it is over the house of Judah alone—not yet over all Israel. This partial kingdom reflects the complex reality that God's promises unfold gradually through history. David's response to learning that men from Jabesh-gilead had honored Saul by burying him is noteworthy: he blesses them and promises to reward their kindness (verses 5–7). This shows David's magnanimity and respect for the previous king, qualities that will serve him well as a unifier.
Abner's decision to crown Ishbosheth represents human resistance to God's anointed plan. Despite the divine selection of David, Abner uses military power to prop up Saul's house, making Ishbosheth king over the eastern and northern tribes. Verse 10 notes that Ishbosheth reigned only two years, while David's reign in Hebron lasted seven years and six months—a period of prolonged tension. This extended civil war was not part of God's perfect will, yet God permitted it, allowing David's character to be tested and refined and giving the northern tribes time to accept the reality of David's anointing.
The encounter at the pool of Gibeon escalates from a symbolic contest of "young men" into full-scale battle. Abner's initial proposal for the twelve-man match (verse 14) was perhaps meant as a decisive test, but it spiraled into bloody warfare. Asahel's pursuit of Abner shows youthful boldness but poor judgment. Abner twice warns Asahel to turn aside (verses 21–22), expressing concern about facing Joab with his brother's blood on his hands. When Asahel refuses to listen, Abner kills him in self-defense with a spear thrust. This tragic death will later fuel blood-feud tensions within David's kingdom.
Abner recognizes the mounting casualties and appeals to Joab's reason: "Shall the sword devour for ever?" (verse 26). Joab agrees to cease pursuit, demonstrating tactical wisdom. The final tally shows David's forces were clearly victorious—360 of Abner's men fell versus only 19 of David's (verse 31)—yet the war is far from over. The men honor Asahel with a proper burial in Bethlehem, acknowledging his bravery even as they grieve his rashness.
This chapter teaches us that God's purposes will ultimately prevail, but we must always seek His direction rather than relying on human ambition or military might. Like David, we should honor those who serve faithfully even if they oppose us, and we should recognize that prolonged conflicts often teach deeper lessons than swift victories. When facing opposition to God's clear calling in our lives, patience and integrity matter more than aggressive conquest.
