Study Notes — 2 Kings 9
6 sections2 Kings 9 records the dramatic anointing of Jehu as king of Israel and his swift execution of divine judgment against the house of Ahab. Through the prophet Elisha, God commissions a young prophet to anoint Jehu, declaring that he will be the instrument of God's vengeance for the blood of the prophets shed by Jezebel. This chapter demonstrates God's patience reaching its limit with persistent idolatry and violence, and shows how the Lord uses civil authority—even forcefully—to accomplish His purposes of justice and cleansing in the land.
Elisha calls one of his prophetic students and gives him a specific, urgent mission: to travel to Ramoth-gilead and anoint Jehu as king over Israel. The use of oil for anointing (verse 3) is deeply significant in Israel's tradition—it signified God's choice and empowerment of a leader (see 1 Samuel 10:1). Elisha's instruction to flee immediately after anointing (verse 3) suggests the danger and urgency of the task. This is not a political appointment but a divine appointment, authenticated by the phrase "Thus saith the LORD."
The young prophet successfully locates Jehu among the military captains at Ramoth-gilead and isolates him privately. In verse 6, he formally anoints Jehu, declaring him king "over the people of the LORD, even over Israel." The crucial point comes in verses 7–10: Jehu is not merely receiving a crown but receiving a commission to execute judgment. He will "smite the house of Ahab" in vengeance for the blood of God's prophets and servants that Jezebel has shed (verse 7). Verses 8–9 use graphic language—cutting off all males and reducing Ahab's house to the fate of previous evil dynasties. Most strikingly, verse 10 foretells that Jezebel herself will be eaten by dogs and left unburied, a terrible curse in the ancient Near East.
Upon leaving the inner chamber, Jehu is questioned by his fellow officers (verse 11). Initially evasive, he finally reveals the prophet's words in verse 12. The captains' response is immediate and dramatic: they hail Jehu as king (verse 13), using their garments as a makeshift throne and sounding trumpets. This spontaneous acclamation by the soldiers shows that Jehu's authority is recognized by the military establishment. Verse 15 reveals Jehu's strategic wisdom—he ensures that no messenger can warn King Joram in Jezreel before his arrival, preventing escape.
Jehu rides furiously toward Jezreel (verse 16), where the wounded King Joram lies. Two messengers are sent to inquire "Is it peace?" but Jehu dismisses them both (verses 18–19). The watchman notes his furious driving (verse 20)—a phrase that becomes Jehu's signature characteristic. Meeting Joram and Ahaziah of Judah in Naboth's field (verse 21), Jehu declares that there can be no peace while Jezebel's "whoredoms" and "witchcrafts" continue (verse 22). In verse 24, Jehu strikes Joram with an arrow to the heart. In verse 25, he orders Joram's body cast into Naboth's field, fulfilling Elijah's earlier prophecy (1 Kings 21:17–24) about the blood price for Naboth's murder. Ahaziah of Judah is also struck down (verses 27–28), showing that alliance with evil receives no mercy.
When Jezebel learns of Jehu's approach, she defiantly prepares herself (verse 30), but her bravery turns to dust. She is hurled from a window by eunuchs (verses 32–33), trampled beneath horses' hooves, and devoured by dogs, with only her skull, feet, and palms remaining (verse 35). Verse 36 explicitly connects this to Elijah's prophecy, showing that God's word never fails. Even Jehu, moved by her royal dignity, orders a proper burial—but God's judgment stands.
This chapter shows that God takes the shedding of innocent blood with utmost seriousness and that His judgment, though sometimes delayed, is ultimately certain. We are reminded that sin—especially rebellion against God and cruelty toward His people—has real consequences. Yet we must also remember that in Christ, judgment and mercy meet: through His blood, guilty sinners find forgiveness rather than destruction, provided we repent and believe.
