Study Notes — 2 Kings 19
7 sectionsSecond Kings 19 records one of the most dramatic demonstrations of God's power in the Old Testament. When King Sennacherib of Assyria threatens Jerusalem with overwhelming military force, King Hezekiah responds not with military might but with faith and prayer. Through the prophet Isaiah, God delivers a remarkable word of assurance, culminating in a supernatural deliverance where the angel of the LORD destroys the Assyrian army in a single night. This chapter beautifully illustrates the principle that our trust in God's character and power is far more effective than reliance on human strength.
When Hezekiah hears the blasphemous threats of Rabshakeh, Sennacherib's field commander, he responds with profound spiritual sensitivity. He tears his clothes and covers himself with sackcloth—outward expressions of inner distress and repentance. Rather than consulting military advisors, he goes directly to the house of the LORD (verse 1). He then sends his officials to the prophet Isaiah, describing the crisis with a vivid image: "the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth" (verse 3). This metaphor captures the impossibility of their situation—like a woman in labor without the strength to deliver. Hezekiah's request to Isaiah is simple but profound: "lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left" (verse 4). The lesson here is clear: in times of crisis, believers should first seek God's counsel through His Word and His servants, not human resources.
Isaiah responds immediately with a message of courage: "Be not afraid" (verse 6). God promises to send a "blast" (likely a divine wind or plague) upon Sennacherib, who will hear a rumor that will cause him to return to his own land, where he will fall by the sword (verse 7). This word comes with absolute certainty—not perhaps, but shall. The historical detail in verse 8 shows that even as this word is spoken, events are already unfolding; Rabshakeh returns to find the king warring against Libnah. Faith is not blind optimism; it rests on God's character and His demonstrated ability to accomplish His purposes.
When Sennacherib hears of Egyptian forces marching against him (verse 9), he sends a written message attempting to shake Hezekiah's faith. He taunts him with the conquered nations and their helpless gods (verses 10–13). But Hezekiah's response is instructive: he reads the letter, then immediately brings it before the LORD in the temple (verse 14). He does not ignore the threat, nor does he panic. Instead, he brings it to God in prayer.
Hezekiah's prayer is theologically rich. He acknowledges God's sovereignty over all kingdoms, His creative power, and His unique divinity (verse 15). He asks God to hear and see the blasphemy directed against Him (verses 16–17), and he correctly identifies that the conquered nations' gods were merely human creations of wood and stone (verses 17–18). His ultimate prayer is not merely for deliverance, but that "all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD God" (verse 19). True prayer focuses not ultimately on our preservation, but on God's glory and reputation.
Isaiah returns with God's answer (verse 20). Using poetic language, God describes Jerusalem as the virgin daughter of Zion, unmoved by Sennacherib's boasting (verse 21). The extended passage (verses 22–28) reveals God's complete knowledge of Sennacherib's plans and His sovereign control—even placing a hook in his nose like a captured animal. The sign of deliverance involves three years of recovery (verses 29–30), and the promise is absolute: "He shall not come into this city" (verse 32).
That very night, the angel of the LORD destroys 185,000 Assyrian soldiers (verse 35). Sennacherib returns to Nineveh where he is later assassinated by his own sons (verses 36–37). God's Word proves utterly reliable.
When we face overwhelming circumstances, our first response should be prayer and trust in God's character, not anxiety or human scheming. God invites us to spread our burdens before Him and to remember that His reputation and glory are ultimately at stake in our difficulties. Like Hezekiah, we can rest in the God who knows all things, controls all events, and is infinitely more powerful than any earthly threat.
