32 Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out. Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”

Study Notes — 2 Kings 6
5 sectionsSecond Kings 6 presents a striking contrast between God's tender care in small matters and His sovereign power over mighty armies. The chapter opens with a humble miracle—the recovery of a borrowed axe head—and moves into an elaborate account of how the Lord protects His prophet Elisha from the Syrian army through supernatural means. These events culminate in a sobering scene of famine and desperation in Samaria, where the king's faith crumbles and he turns his anger toward the very prophet God has been using to deliver Israel. Throughout, the chapter illustrates both the faithfulness of God to His servants and the tragic consequences of unbelief among His people.
The sons of the prophets approach Elisha asking permission to enlarge their dwelling place. They plan to harvest timber from the Jordan valley, and Elisha graciously agrees to accompany them. During the work, one man's axe head flies into the water—a borrowed tool—and he cries out in distress (verses 5–6). This is a touching detail: the young prophet is concerned not merely about his loss, but about his responsibility to the tool's owner. Elisha responds by asking where the axe fell, then performs a quiet miracle. He cuts a stick and casts it into the water, and the iron swims (verse 6). The axe head floats to the surface, defying the laws of nature, and the man retrieves it. This miracle demonstrates that God cares about the small worries of His servants. There is no fanfare, no great pronouncement—just tender divine care for an honest man facing shame over a borrowed possession. For believers today, this teaches that no concern is too small for God's attention.
The scene shifts dramatically. Ben-hadad, king of Syria, wages war against Israel and strategizes with his officers about where to position his military camp (verse 8). However, Elisha repeatedly warns the king of Israel about Syrian movements before they occur, causing Ben-hadad's plans to fail repeatedly (verses 9–10). Furious, the Syrian king determines to capture Elisha, believing the prophet is a spy. His servants tell him that Elisha reports even the words spoken in Ben-hadad's private chamber (verse 12). The king locates Elisha in Dothan and sends horses, chariots, and a great army to surround the city by night (verses 13–14). When Elisha's young servant awakens and sees the Syrian host encircling the city, he panics (verse 15). This moment captures human fear in the face of overwhelming odds.
Elisha's response is one of Scripture's most profound statements of faith: "Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them" (verse 16). He then prays that God would open his servant's eyes, and the young man sees the mountain filled with horses and chariots of fire—the heavenly host protecting God's prophet (verse 17). When the Syrian soldiers approach, Elisha prays again, and the Lord strikes them with blindness (verse 18). Elisha then leads the blinded army to Samaria, where their sight is restored, and they find themselves trapped in Israel's capital (verses 19–20). Rather than slaughter them, the king asks Elisha's permission. Elisha commands mercy: prepare food and water and send them home (verse 22). This extraordinary act of grace causes the Syrian bands to cease their raids (verse 23). The lesson is clear: God's power is absolute, but His servants are called to reflect His mercy.
The chapter concludes darkly. Ben-hadad returns with a full siege of Samaria, creating such famine that people resort to cannibalism (verses 24–29). The king, in despair, blames Elisha and swears to execute him (verse 31). Even in the presence of the prophet and the elders, he refuses to believe that deliverance is possible. Elisha alone maintains faith, confident that God will act (verse 32).
God's character embraces both the small and the great: He cares about our daily burdens and demonstrates His power over our greatest fears. Yet faith requires trust even when circumstances appear hopeless. Like the king of Israel, we often grow angry at God during trials rather than turning to Him in faith. May we learn to fear Him alone, not our enemies, and to extend mercy as He has shown us mercy.
