Study Notes — 2 Kings 18
4 sectionsSecond Kings 18 presents a pivotal moment in Judah's history through the reign of King Hezekiah, one of the most godly monarchs in Israel's lineage. The chapter divides into two distinct movements: first, Hezekiah's sweeping religious reforms and military successes (verses 1-8), and second, the devastating Assyrian siege under Sennacherib and the psychological warfare waged through Rabshakeh's blasphemous threats (verses 9-37). Throughout, the narrative illustrates both the blessing of trusting God and the testing of that faith when circumstances appear hopeless.
Hezekiah begins his reign at age twenty-five and rules Judah for twenty-nine years. The text emphasizes immediately that he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did (verse 3)—establishing him as David's spiritual heir, not merely his biological descendant. His mother, Abi, daughter of Zachariah, likely influenced his early piety.
Verses 4-5 detail his radical religious reforms: removing high places (unauthorized worship sites), destroying idolatrous images and Asherah groves, and remarkably, breaking the brass serpent that Moses had made. This last act reveals spiritual maturity—the serpent, once a sign of God's healing (Numbers 21), had become an object of false worship. Hezekiah's naming it Nehushtan (a brass thing, implying worthlessness) shows his refusal to permit even holy relics to become idols.
Verse 5 offers extraordinary praise: after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. His trust in the Lord and obedience to His commandments (verses 5-6) produce visible blessing: military victories over the Philistines and successful rebellion against Assyrian vassalage (verse 7). Practical Application: Hezekiah demonstrates that genuine faith produces both inward devotion and outward fruit. When we remove idols from our hearts and trust God completely, His hand of blessing extends to every area of life.
The narrative pauses to show the consequence of the northern kingdom's disobedience. In Hezekiah's fourth year, Shalmaneser besieges Samaria and captures it after three years (verse 9-10). The ten tribes are deported to Assyria (verse 11), and the text offers the divine explanation: they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant (verse 12). This serves as a sobering backdrop—judgment is real when God's people reject Him.
In the fourteenth year of Hezekiah's reign, Sennacherib attacks Judah's fortified cities. Hezekiah initially responds by paying tribute—three hundred talents of silver and thirty of gold (verses 13-16)—stripping even the temple doors of their gold overlay. This reveals human weakness: despite his faith, Hezekiah first attempts an earthly solution.
However, Sennacherib's appetite is insatiable. He sends three officials—Tartan, Rabsaris, and Rabshakeh—with a massive army to Jerusalem. Rabshakeh's speech (verses 19-35) combines psychological manipulation with blasphemy. He mocks Hezekiah's trust (verse 19), ridicules Egyptian alliances as a "bruised reed" (verse 21), and—most audaciously—claims the Lord Himself sent him to destroy Judah (verse 25). His final taunt: what gods have delivered any nation from Assyria's hand?
Hezekiah's officials wisely request Rabshakeh speak Aramaic rather than Hebrew, preventing public panic (verse 26), but he deliberately addresses the people in Hebrew anyway (verse 28), attempting to turn them against their king. Yet the people remain silent (verse 36)—a sign they still trust their king, and implicitly, his God.
Practical Application: Rabshakeh represents the voice of worldly pressure and fear. His logic seems irrefutable by human standards, yet his very confidence in earthly might blinds him to God's power. The people's silence signals faith in God despite overwhelming odds.
Hezekiah's life teaches us that wholehearted devotion to God produces real blessing, but also that our faith will be tested. Like Hezekiah's initial tribute-payment, we sometimes resort to earthly solutions before remembering God's sufficiency. The siege reminds us that faith isn't naive—circumstances may appear desperate—but God's power exceeds all earthly threats. Where are you tempted to trust in "bruised reeds" rather than in Christ? Call upon Him today with the trust Hezekiah ultimately demonstrates.
