28 As for the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, along with all his accomplishments and might, and how he waged war and recovered both Damascus and Hamath for Israel from Judah, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?

Study Notes — 2 Kings 14
6 sections2 Kings 14 presents a crucial turning point in the divided monarchy, chronicling the reign of Amaziah of Judah and his disastrous conflict with Israel's king Jehoash. While Amaziah begins well—executing his father's murderers according to God's law and defeating Edom—pride overtakes him, leading to a humiliating military defeat and the plundering of Jerusalem. The chapter also introduces Jeroboam II of Israel, who despite his spiritual failure, becomes God's instrument to deliver Israel from oppression, demonstrating the sovereign mercy of God even when His people remain in rebellion.
Amaziah becomes king of Judah at twenty-five years old and reigns for twenty-nine years. The text notes that he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David (v. 3)—a telling qualification. His righteousness is real but incomplete, following the pattern of his father Joash rather than the wholehearted devotion of David. Once his throne is secure, Amaziah executes the assassins who murdered his father. This demonstrates both justice and obedience to the throne's establishment, though it also reflects the political necessity of eliminating threats to his reign.
Significantly, Amaziah spares the children of the murderers (v. 6), citing the Mosaic law that prohibits punishing children for their fathers' sins. This is a striking moment of legal restraint and doctrinal faithfulness (see Deuteronomy 24:16). Amaziah then achieves military success against Edom, defeating ten thousand soldiers and conquering the city of Selah. These victories appear to be God-given (Amaziah had sought the Lord in an earlier parallel account in 2 Chronicles 25), but they sow the seeds of the pride that will soon destroy him.
Amaziah challenges Jehoash, king of Israel, to war. Jehoash's response is a memorable parable: The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar of Lebanon... and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle (v. 9). The thistle represents weak, inferior Judah; the cedar represents mighty Israel; the wild beast is the crushing power of superior military force. This is a merciful warning, but Amaziah would not hear (v. 11). Pride has blinded him to both the divine warning and political reality. His military disaster follows swiftly.
Judah is routed at Bethshemesh. Amaziah is captured personally, and Jehoash breaks down Jerusalem's walls, plunders the temple treasury, and takes hostages. The king who once showed judicial wisdom now reaps the whirlwind of unchecked pride. His later assassination (v. 19) shows that his people lost confidence in his leadership.
The chapter closes by introducing Jeroboam II, whom God uses to restore Israel's borders according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of his servant Jonah the prophet (v. 25). Though Jeroboam walks in sin, God's compassion restrains His judgment: the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam (v. 27). This reveals God's patience with His people and His purpose to preserve them even when they stray.
Amaziah's tragic arc teaches us that partial obedience and initial success can breed destructive pride if we forget God's sovereignty. Success is not a sign of our wisdom—it is a gift from God that demands humble gratitude and continued submission. When God's Word and wise counsel warn us away from a course, rejection brings certain ruin. Like Israel and Judah, we too depend entirely on God's mercy, not on our military might or political power. Our calling is faithful obedience in small things, knowing that pride precedes the fall.
