Chapter Commentary — Judges 16
Chapter Overview

Chapter Overview

Judges 16 records the tragic decline and redemptive final act of Samson, Israel's most physically powerful judge. After years of victories against the Philistines, Samson becomes entangled with Delilah, a woman who betrays him for silver. Through this chapter we witness the perilous consequences of spiritual compromise, the patience of God in bringing His servant to repentance, and the stunning reality that God can accomplish His purposes even through our failure and death. This account serves as a sobering reminder that physical strength means nothing without spiritual vigilance, and that God's grace is available even to those who have squandered their calling.

Verses 1–3: The Beginning of Compromise

Samson's descent begins in Gaza, where he visits a harlot. While the text records no immediate judgment, this decision reveals a man increasingly governed by appetite rather than conviction. The Gazites set an ambush, but Samson escapes at midnight by literally tearing away the city gates and carrying them uphill. This display of supernatural strength is remarkable, yet it masks a deeper spiritual problem: Samson possesses the power of God but lacks His discipline. The contrast is stark—he can move mountains but cannot master his own desires.

Verses 4–12: Delilah's Seduction

Samson falls in love with Delilah, a woman in the valley of Sorok. The Philistine lords offer her eleven hundred pieces of silver to discover the source of his strength. Delilah becomes Samson's tempter, repeatedly asking him to reveal his secret. He responds three times with false answers: green withs, new ropes, and woven hair. Each time she cries out that the Philistines are upon him, and each time he effortlessly escapes, unaware that he is being tested. Samson's willingness to lie repeatedly to his lover shows a man whose conscience has grown dangerously dull. He treats this deadly game lightly, apparently entertained by his own deceptions.

Verses 13–18: The Unraveling

Delilah presses him relentlessly. She accuses him of mockery and challenges him to prove his love by telling the truth. Worn down by her constant pleading, Samson finally reveals what God had given him: his uncut hair, the sign of his Nazarite vow to the Lord. In this moment, Samson makes the ultimate choice to prioritize a woman over his covenant with God. He exchanges eternal purpose for temporary affection. Immediately upon his confession, Delilah sends for the Philistine lords with their payment ready.

Verses 19–21: Capture and Humiliation

Samson is shaved while asleep on Delilah's lap. When he awakens and is attacked, he discovers with horror that "the LORD was departed from him." The Philistines capture, blind, and imprison him in Gaza, forcing him to grind grain like an animal. This punishment is devastating: the man who had judged Israel for twenty years is now enslaved and mutilated. Yet verse 22 notes quietly that his hair "began to grow again"—a sign of God's patient mercy and preparation for restoration.

Verses 23–30: Final Victory and Redemption

At a festival honoring Dagon, the Philistines summon the blinded Samson for sport. Standing between the support pillars, Samson prays his first recorded prayer to the Lord: "Remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once." God answers. Samson pulls down the pillars, killing more Philistines in his death than in his lifetime. His life ends in submission to God's will, not his own.

Verses 31: Honorable Burial

His family buries him with honor between Zorah and Eshtaol, acknowledging that despite his failure, he remained a judge of Israel.

Application for Today

Samson's story warns us that spiritual gifts without spiritual discipline lead to ruin. Yet it also teaches that repentance is never too late, and that God uses even broken vessels to accomplish His purposes. When we compromise in small ways—through lust, dishonesty, or divided loyalty—we gradually distance ourselves from God's strength. The remedy is honest confession and a return to covenant obedience. God's mercy, like Samson's growing hair, quietly restores what sin has taken.
