1 Chronicles 7 continues the genealogical records of Israel's northern tribes, documenting the descendants of Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Asher. While genealogies may seem like mere lists to modern readers, they served a vital purpose in Israel's history—they established tribal identity, inheritance rights, and connection to God's covenant promises. This chapter emphasizes the military strength and organizational stability of these tribes during the time of David, showing how God's people were multiplied and preserved according to His faithfulness. The repetition of phrases like "mighty men of valour" and precise numbering reflects the importance of these tribes in Israel's security and witness.

The chapter opens with the sons of Issachar—Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimrom—and traces their descendants through several generations. Verse 2 notes that in David's time, the descendants of Tola numbered 22,600 mighty men of valour. This phrase, repeated throughout the chapter, emphasizes both physical strength and spiritual fitness for service. The genealogy shows careful record-keeping: each line traces through heads of households who were recognized leaders. Verse 5 indicates that all the families of Issachar totaled 87,000 mighty men, demonstrating the tribe's significant military contribution to the kingdom.

Benjamin's genealogy (verses 6–12) follows a similar pattern. Bela's descendants numbered 22,034 warriors (verse 7), Becher's line produced 20,200 soldiers (verse 9), and Jediael's descendants fielded 17,200 men fit for war (verse 11). These numbers, while challenging to verify historically, demonstrate that the chronicler understood these tribes as vital to Israel's defense and national identity.

The record of Manasseh and Ephraim becomes more detailed, reflecting their prominence as Joseph's sons. Notably, verse 14 mentions Manasseh's concubine, an Aramean woman, who bore Machir—a reminder that Israel's genealogies include complex family situations yet maintain continuity of God's covenant line.

The Ephraim section (verses 20–29) contains a poignant historical note. Verses 20–21 record that Ezer and Elead, men of Ephraim, were slain by the inhabitants of Gath when they raided for cattle. This tragic incident illustrates the real dangers of the tribal period. Verse 22 tells us their father Ephraim mourned many days, yet verse 23 shows God's mercy: after mourning, his wife conceived and bore Beriah, whose name means "in evil" or "calamity," commemorating the family's tragedy but also God's sustaining grace.

Verses 28–29 describe the territories and cities possessed by Ephraim and the half-tribe of Manasseh, including Bethel, Gezer, Shechem, Bethshean, Taanach, Megiddo, and Dor. These were strategically important cities that anchored Israel's central highland territory.

Asher's genealogy rounds out the chapter with similar detail, listing descendants through multiple generations. Verse 40 emphasizes that Asher's descendants were "choice and mighty men of valour, chief of the princes," with 26,000 warriors available for war. The repetition of military capability across all these tribes reinforces a central message: God had blessed Israel with numbers, strength, and organized leadership.
