David, now elderly but still mentally sharp, makes Solomon king over Israel and assembles the nation's leadership—princes, priests, and Levites—to hear his vision for the temple service. The Levites numbered 38,000 men of service age, divided strategically: 24,000 for temple work, 6,000 as officers and judges, 4,000 as gatekeepers (porters), and 4,000 as musicians praising God with instruments David himself had designed. This allocation shows David's conviction that worship is not peripheral to God's kingdom but central to it. The mention of instruments "which I made" reveals David's personal investment in creating beauty and excellence for divine worship. His final years were spent ensuring the next generation would inherit both political stability and spiritual vitality.

David organizes the Levites into three main courses (divisions) based on the three sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. The text then details the family heads under each division with careful genealogical precision. Verse 13 deserves special attention: Aaron and his descendants are permanently separated for the priesthood proper—to sanctify the most holy things, burn incense, minister before the Lord, and pronounce blessings in God's name forever. This reflects the core biblical principle that God establishes offices and functions according to His design, not human preference. Moses' descendants, by contrast, served as regular Levites, showing that even the greatest human leader must submit to God's ordained structure.

The genealogy of Merari's line is recorded similarly, with a notable detail in verse 22: when Eleazar died without sons, his daughters married their cousins (the sons of Kish), keeping the inheritance within the tribe. Verse 24 reveals an important revision: while verse 3 numbered Levites from age 30 upward, verse 24 and verse 27 indicate David's later command reduced the age to 20 years old and above. This adjustment likely reflects practical experience—fewer years of service meant more hands were needed for the expanding temple work under Solomon.

David explains his rationale: God has given Israel rest and established Jerusalem as a permanent dwelling place (verses 25–26). Therefore, the Levites no longer need to carry the portable tabernacle; instead, they'll serve in the fixed temple, waiting on the priests and managing its operations—from preparing shewbread and grain offerings to leading daily worship and overseeing sacrifices on sabbaths, new moons, and appointed feasts (verses 28–32). This transition from nomadic to settled worship illustrates how God's people must adjust their practices to new seasons and circumstances, always maintaining the substance of worship even as its expression changes.
