Study Notes — 1 Chronicles 15
6 sections1 Chronicles 15 recounts David's successful preparation to bring the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. Unlike his first failed attempt (described in 1 Chronicles 13), David now carefully follows God's prescribed order by enlisting the Levites as designated carriers and appointing musicians and priests to accompany the ark with joy and reverence. This chapter demonstrates the importance of obedience to God's instructions and shows how worship, when done properly, unites God's people in celebration and brings His blessing.
David begins by preparing a proper place for the ark—building houses in Jerusalem and pitching a tent as its dwelling place (v. 1). He then recognizes a critical truth: only the Levites are appointed by God to carry the ark (v. 2). This reflects David's repentance from his earlier mistake, when he had attempted to move the ark on a cart (2 Samuel 6:3), resulting in the death of Uzzah. Now, having learned from that tragedy, David gathers all Israel and assembles the Levites specifically for this sacred task (v. 3). The lesson here is clear: God's instructions matter, and obedience often requires humility and correction.
The text carefully lists the Levitical families and their numbers: sons of Kohath (120), Merari (220), Gershom (130), Elizaphan (200), Hebron (80), and Uzziel (112). These were the descendants of Levi, organized by their family lines and leadership. The detailed enumeration underscores that this was an organized, official act of worship, not a casual religious gathering. Every group had a chief, and all were called to this sacred responsibility.
David calls the chief Levites and priests and commands them to sanctify themselves (v. 12). His words are particularly instructive: "For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order" (v. 13). David acknowledges that the earlier failure occurred because they had not followed God's prescribed order. This verse teaches a profound principle: approaching God carelessly invites His judgment, but seeking Him "after the due order" brings blessing. The priests and Levites obey, sanctifying themselves to handle this holy responsibility (v. 14).
The Levites now carry the ark correctly—upon their shoulders with staves, exactly as Moses had commanded (v. 15). David then appoints singers and musicians: Heman, Asaph, and Ethan lead with cymbals and instruments (vv. 16-19), while other Levites play psalteries and harps (vv. 20-21). Chenaniah, skilled in song, directs the music (v. 22). Priests blow trumpets before the ark (v. 24). This orchestration demonstrates that worship is to be both reverent and joyful, ordered and celebratory.
With everything properly prepared, David leads the ark to Jerusalem "with joy" (v. 25). When God helps the Levites, sacrifices are offered (v. 26). David himself wears priestly linen and dances before the Lord (v. 27). All Israel participates "with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals" (v. 28). Yet the chapter ends with a sobering note: Michal, Saul's daughter, despises David's unbridled worship (v. 29). This contrast reminds us that true worship may be misunderstood by those who lack spiritual vision.
David's journey teaches us that worship requires both reverence and obedience to God's revealed design. When we approach God carelessly, ignoring His Word, we invite His discipline. But when we prepare our hearts, follow biblical order, and engage wholeheartedly—unashamed and joyful—God's blessing flows abundantly. Let us examine our own worship: Are we seeking God "after the due order" found in Scripture, combining reverence with rejoicing?
