41 These who were noted by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah. They attacked the Hamites and Meunites there in their dwellings, devoting them to destruction even to this day. Then they settled in their place, because there was pasture for their flocks.

Study Notes — 1 Chronicles 4
5 sectionsFirst Chronicles 4 continues the genealogical record of Judah and Simeon, preserving the tribal ancestry and settlement patterns that shaped Israel's tribal identity. While genealogies might seem like mere lists of names, they serve important theological purposes: they validate tribal inheritance rights, demonstrate God's faithfulness in preserving His people through generations, and provide historical context for understanding Israel's development as a nation. Interspersed throughout these names are glimpses of individual character and faith, most notably in the prayer of Jabez, which offers a powerful model of earnest intercession that God delights to answer.
These opening verses trace the line of Judah's sons through multiple generations, establishing the genealogical foundations for the tribe. The detailed mention of family branches—Zorathites, the family of Etam, and others—shows that the chronicler is carefully documenting not just individual descendants but entire family clans with their territorial associations. Verse 4 specifically identifies Hur as "the firstborn of Ephratah, the father of Bethlehem," a significant note because it connects this genealogy to the town that would later produce King David and, ultimately, Jesus Christ. These genealogies, though detailed, remind us that God knows every generation and every person by name—nothing is lost in His sight.
This passage stands out as one of Scripture's most beloved prayers, worthy of special attention. Jabez's name literally means "sorrow" because his mother bore him with pain (v. 9). Rather than accept a life defined by this sorrowful beginning, Jabez called on the God of Israel with a specific, bold request: blessing, enlarged territory, God's presence, and protection from evil (v. 10). The text tells us simply but profoundly, "God granted him that which he requested" (v. 10). This teaches us that prayer changes things and that God honors those who seek Him earnestly. Jabez did not accept limitation or shame; he appealed to God's character and provision. His example invites us to bring our requests confidently before God, trusting that He delights in answering the prayers of those who seek Him with sincere hearts.
These verses continue documenting Judahite clans and notably mention their professional skills. Verse 14 identifies the family of Joab as associated with "the valley of Charashim" (meaning "craftsmen"), indicating they were skilled artisans. Verse 21 preserves a record of "them that wrought fine linen," showing that the tribe of Judah included people in various trades and crafts. Verse 23 mentions "potters" and those who "dwelt among plants and hedges," working "with the king for his work." This reminds us that all honest labor is honorable, and that God values and preserves the record of faithful work done in His service, whether that work is leadership, craftsmanship, or agriculture.
The final section documents Simeon's genealogy and territorial expansion. Verses 28–32 list Simeon's cities; verses 34–37 name their tribal leaders. Significantly, verse 38 notes that "the house of their fathers increased greatly," showing how God blessed the tribe's growth. Verses 39–41 record how they sought pasture for their flocks, found good land, and eventually displaced the Hamites living there during King Hezekiah's reign. Verses 42–43 describe a military campaign against the Amalekites, showing that expansion required both faith and action. This section illustrates how God's blessing involves both provision and responsibility—the Simeonites had to actively pursue and secure what God provided.
These genealogies remind us that our lives matter to God. Just as He recorded every name and generation of Judah and Simeon, He knows us intimately and has a purpose for each of us. Like Jabez, we are invited to bring our boldest prayers before the Lord, trusting that He hears and answers. And like the Simeonites, we are called to active faith—seeking God's provision, accepting His assignments, and working faithfully in whatever sphere He places us. Our labors, our prayers, and our faithfulness are never forgotten by our God.
