1 Chronicles 8

Chapter 8 presents the genealogy of the tribe of Benjamin, one of the two southern tribes that remained faithful to the house of David after Israel's division. This detailed lineage serves multiple purposes: it establishes the legitimate descendants of Benjamin, connects them to Jerusalem and other key cities, and ultimately leads to King Saul and his descendants. For the post-exilic Jewish community reading this chronicle, these genealogies affirm continuity with their past and God's faithfulness in preserving a remnant. The chapter opens by listing Benjamin's five sons: Bela, Ashbel, Aharah, Nohah, and Rapha (v. 1-2). We then trace Bela's descendants through several generations, noting that these families served as heads of households and clans. Verse 6 indicates that descendants of Ehud (likely a judge, though not extensively detailed in Scripture) were moved from Geba to Manahath, suggesting geographical displacement—possibly due to conflict or strategic relocation. This passage reminds us that God's people experienced various seasons of upheaval and resettlement, yet their genealogical records preserved their identity and inheritance rights.

Verse 8 introduces Shaharaim, who had wives and children both in Israel and in Moab, suggesting dispersal of the Benjamite clan across broader territories. Notably, verse 12 mentions that Shamed "built Ono, and Lod, with the towns thereof"—a reminder that these genealogies are not mere names but connect to actual historical settlement and development. Verse 13 records how certain Benjamites "drove away the inhabitants of Gath," indicating active military and territorial engagement. These verses show that genealogy in Scripture is always tied to real places, real actions, and God's providential ordering of His people's inheritance.

This section catalogs many Benjamite family heads, concluding at verse 28 with the statement: "These were heads of the fathers, by their generations, chief men. These dwelt in Jerusalem." This is significant—after the exile, Benjamin's leading families were reestablished in Jerusalem, the spiritual and political center of God's kingdom. These were not anonymous names but recognized leaders with authority, lineage, and responsibility before God and their people. The repetition emphasizes stability and order in the restored community.

The genealogy reaches a climax by tracing the line from Gibeon down to Saul (v. 33): "Ner begat Kish, and Kish begat Saul." Saul was Israel's first king—a figure of great significance but also of tragic disobedience. Verses 34-38 extend this line through his son Jonathan and grandson Meribbaal (also called Mephibosheth). The careful preservation of Saul's genealogy, despite his failures, demonstrates that God's record-keeping is impartial and comprehensive. Even kings who fell short are accounted for in God's purposes. Verse 40 concludes by noting that these Benjamites included "mighty men of valour, archers, and had many sons, and sons' sons, an hundred and fifty"—a testament to God's blessing on the tribe.
