Chapter Commentary — Job 15
Chapter Overview

Chapter Overview

In chapter 15, Eliphaz responds to Job's previous complaint with sharp rebuke and theological argument. Rather than offering comfort, Eliphaz accuses Job of arrogance, impiety, and casting off the fear of God. He then launches into an extended discourse on the inevitable judgment that befalls the wicked, painting a dark portrait of moral corruption and divine retribution. While Eliphaz's theology contains some truth about God's justice, his application to Job's situation is fundamentally wrong—he assumes Job must be secretly wicked to deserve such suffering. This chapter illustrates how partial truth, when applied without compassion and without understanding God's fuller purposes, becomes a harmful weapon rather than a healing word.

Verses 1–5: The Accusation of Foolish Speech

Eliphaz opens with rhetorical questions designed to shame Job. He accuses him of uttering "vain knowledge" and filling his belly with "east wind"—a vivid image of consuming something empty and destructive (verses 1–2). The metaphor suggests that Job's words are insubstantial and harmful, like a scorching desert wind that produces nothing of value. Eliphaz then moves from criticizing Job's words to attacking his character, claiming that Job has "cast off fear" and restrained prayer before God (verse 4). Notice the spiritual diagnosis: in Eliphaz's view, Job's suffering stems not from mystery or testing, but from abandoned reverence for the Almighty. Verse 5 escalates the charge—Job's own mouth has become evidence of hidden iniquity. This is a classic logical fallacy: Eliphaz assumes that because Job is suffering and speaking in distress, he must be guilty of secret sin.

Verses 6–13: The Appeal to Age and Authority

Eliphaz appeals to the authority of age and accumulated wisdom (verses 10–11). He reminds Job that their company includes "grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father," suggesting that Job's youthful or presumptuous challenges to divine justice are out of place. The question "Hast thou heard the secret of God?" (verse 8) is particularly pointed—Eliphaz suggests that Job is arrogantly claiming special revelation or insight that he does not possess. In verses 12–13, Eliphaz diagnoses Job's problem as spiritual blindness: his heart has "carried him away," and his eyes "wink at" (turn away from) the truth. The result is that he has turned his spirit against God himself. Throughout this section, Eliphaz maintains that Job's real problem is not his circumstances but his attitude toward God.

Verses 14–16: The Doctrine of Human Depravity

Here Eliphaz articulates a genuinely biblical truth: human beings are sinful by nature and cannot stand before God in their own righteousness (verses 14–15). He notes that even the heavens are "not clean" in God's sight, and that a person born of woman cannot be truly righteous. This echoes Job 4:18–19 and anticipates the doctrine of original sin taught throughout Scripture. However, Eliphaz weaponizes this truth against Job, implying that his extraordinary suffering must reflect extraordinary wickedness (verse 16). The application is wrong, even though the theology is sound.

Verses 17–35: The Fate of the Wicked

Eliphaz offers a lengthy description of divine judgment upon the wicked. The wicked man labors in pain, lives in constant dread, and ultimately dwells in desolation (verses 20–28). Fire consumes his prosperity, and his legacy withers (verses 29–33). While this portrait of judgment contains truth—Scripture does teach that the wicked will face God's justice—Eliphaz applies it indiscriminately to Job without evidence. The assumption that suffering automatically indicates wickedness is a dangerous hermeneutical error that Job himself will ultimately refute.

Application for Today

We must be careful not to play Eliphaz. When we encounter suffering in others' lives, we may feel tempted to assign spiritual causes too quickly or to assume that pain equals punishment. Instead, we should follow Christ's example: listen carefully, show genuine compassion, and resist the urge to diagnose or condemn. Some suffering is indeed consequential, but much serves mysterious purposes in God's plan that we cannot see. Hold your theology carefully but hold your judgments lightly.
