Priests

Old Testament priests were set apart by God to minister in the tabernacle and perform sacrifices on behalf of Israel. Under the Levitical system, only the descendants of Aaron could serve as priests, holding a sacred office that foreshadowed Christ's eternal priesthood.

Overview

God established the Levitical priesthood through Aaron and his sons to serve as mediators between Him and Israel. Priests were uniquely consecrated through anointing oil, given specific duties in tabernacle worship, and held exclusive rights to certain offerings and holy things. Their role emphasized the need for qualified intermediaries to approach a holy God.

Key Scriptures

"Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him.'" (Numbers 3:10, ESV)

"The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: No one of your offspring throughout their generations who has a blemish may approach to offer the bread of his God.'" (Leviticus 22:11, ESV)

"The Lord blessed them, saying, 'The Lord bless you and keep you.'" (Numbers 6:24-25, ESV)

Application

Believers today can appreciate how Christ fulfills the priestly office perfectly, making direct access to God available to all who trust in Him.
